Creative advertisement on Google main page?

Some of you might know that google has a policy of keeping their main webpage as simple as possible. The google main page consist of the google logo, a textfield for keying your search keyword, 2 buttons and several links to other google services. They don’t even have advertisements like their own ads-sense.

So imagine my surprise when I saw a Creative Zen advertisement on the google main page last Friday afternoon. How did creative managed to convince google to run their ads on the main page.

Well, they didn’t. I was using wireless@sg from Qmax. For the uninitiated, Qmax belongs to Qala which belongs to Creative. So when you use wireless@sg by Qmax, they will insert their advertisement at the bottom of EVERY SINGLE PAGE you surf.

I thought IDA paid the 3 service provider to provide wireless@sg for free. Why is Qmax making use of this opportunity to push advertisements to users? The other 2 service provider, Singnet and iCell, only put advertisements on the login page. I'm fine with that since it is not obstructive. But why is Qmax so special that they have to place advertisement on the bottem of every page you surf?

And is this legal? Qmax is hijacking the website and throwing their advertisements on websites that doesn’t belongs to them. Can these website owners sue Qmax? I know the wireless network belongs to Qmax. But the website doesn’t. Does wireless internet network provider has the rights to push ads on these websites? Does website owners have the rights to demand royalties from Qmax for placing advertisement on their website without permission?

Any legal experts here?

Happy Birthday to Wireless@sg

Happy birthday to you Wireless@sg.

It has been one year since you started. I wonder if anyone at IDA remembers that today is your birthday. If you were successful, I think everyone in Singapore will remember this day and celebrate your birth, But you are a great disappointment. Maybe because it is still early for us to pass judgement. Or it could be the over promise made by your parents.

There were talks of future plans like Wimax and stuff. Yes, Wimax sounds good. Longer range and faster access. But what the point of faster access if you can't even log in to begin with?

I still remember my first experience with Wireless@sg. It wasn't a pleasant one. In fact, there wasn't any experience since I couldn't connect on that faithful night. But I didn't give up on you that night cause it was your first night. Perhaps you still need sometime to fine tune everything. But as the time goes by, it seems that the standard will never improve. Getting wireless@sg requires lots of luck. I guess I wasn't lucky enough. That why I keep encountering problems with wireless@sg. Till I got so pissed off that I switched to mobile broadband lately.

I'm blogging this entry at Orchard Road now. Rightfully, there should be wireless@sg network here. But I decided to use my mobile broadband instead. Why risk having high blood pressure?

Anyway, Happy birthday wireless@sg. Hope the standards will improve by your next birthday.

Goodbye Wireless@sg

Wanted to call this entry "Why wireless@sg has failed?". But I guess I don't have the rights to declare that it failed. Besides, only a handful of my friends encounter problem with wireless@sg frequently. A large number of people still think that it is very reliable. Maybe they are plain lucky. Or they didn't use wireless@sg as frequently as us. I've complained enough about wireless@sg. I rest my case. If you are interested, you may check out how many times I complaint about wireless@sg.

Anyway, this entry is not for debating whether wireless@sg has failed or not. Instead, this entry is to let everyone knows that I will not twitter to complain about wireless@sg again.

Why?

Because I've just gotten myself a mobile broadband plan from Singtel. WOOHOO!!!!
No more searching for wireless@sg connection. No more cursing and swearing whenever wireless@sg disconnect me.

Recent events made me realise that I can't depend on wireless@sg anymore. And some of the things that I'm about to embark on requires me to be connected while on the go. I can't let wireless@sg ruin my opportunity. And I'm left with no choice but to subscribe to mobile broadband. Goodbye wireless@sg. I have enough of your nonsense.

I know most people are using M1 mobile broadband. But I choose Singtel because they are cheaper. On top of that, as a Singnet user, I’m given additional 30% discount. And the best part is, they give me the modem for free. (12 months contract)

The only thing about Singtel's mobile broadband is that their modem only includes 1 short USB cable. They don't have the useful 'L' shape USB. I wonder if they sell this in Sim Lim Sq.

Oh, this entry is posted using Singtel mobile broadband at HDB hub. There is Wireless@sg connection here. But I lazy to connect. My friend tried wireless@sg here and complained that it's very laggy. So he took out his M1 mobile broadband. Seriously, how to work using wireless@sg?

Hmmm.... perhaps I should try surfing net on the train later. Wonder if it is stable when on the move.

Update: Tried surfing on train. Network still very stable. Didn't notice any drop in speed. Cool stuff. Am loving it. :D

I wish they stop wireless@sg

I hope IDA gets to read this.

I’m not joking. This is not another sarcastic blog entry by my evil twin brother. I really wish they would stop wireless@sg. The quality of this free service is getting from bad to worst. I used wireless@sg 3 times this week. For 2 occasions, I was able to connect to the network but couldn’t load the login page. For the other occasion, I was able to login to internet but keep getting disconnected every 5 to 10 minutes. Wireless@sg is just too fustrating to use. It is totally not reliable at all. Someone asked me what do I expect from a free service. I guess we can't really expect too much. Yes, it is a free service. But what is the point of being free when the service is unusable? I rather IDA stop this whole wireless@sg project. Revert all the hotspot back to the paying model that we had in the past. At least the wireless hotspot are more reliable back then. I rather pay than put up with this useless thing.

I was a paying customer for wireless hotspot before wireless@sg was here. At a small fee of $10 per month, I never have to worry if the network is available or not. The network is reliable and I don’t remember any occasion when I couldn’t logon to internet. Now that all the paying hotspot has been converted to wireless@sg, you can’t even pay to get a reliable hotspot. Yes, they do provide premium account where you pay to surf at faster speed. But how do you surf at faster speed when you can’t even load the login page? I was a paying customer for wireless@sg premium service for the first few months when it was launched until I was so fed up and decide to cancel the service. It just isn’t worth paying for a network that is unreliable.

I guess I should really go apply for M1 mobile broadband. I cannot afford to have unreliable network if I want to work on the move in the future. At least M1 mobile broadband is more reliable than wireless@sg.

Oh, btw, advance happy birthday to wireless@sg. I still remember the media hoo-ha one year ago when you are born. The media is still saying good things about you. I guess either they never tried using you or they are still in denial. I’m totally disappointed with wireless@sg. And I'm not the only person complaining about it. Saw several people complaining about wireless@sg too. Most of them have switched to M1 mobile broadband.

IDA: Look, if your great wireless@sg is so good, WHY would anyone still want to apply for M1 mobile broadband? Think about it.

This entry is written on MS Word at MW Starbucks on 9 Nov 2007, 7pm. Wireless@sg is unavailable, as usual.

I love wireless@sg

I love wireless@sg. Its the best thing IDA has ever produced. Seriously, wireless@sg is brilliant. Never have I seen anything as good as this.

I really lost count of the number of times wireless@sg disconnect on me. Wow, it sure is exciting when you are using wireless@sg. Everytime you click a link, you will be wondering if the page will load properly. Surfing the internet never been so exciting before. You will either go "WOW. I ganna disconnected again" or "Hey look, I can load that page properly!".

The wonderful wireless@sg network will also log you out frequently. This give you the chance to see the beautifully designed login page again and again. I love the GUI and colour scheme so much that I'm glad that they keep logging me out. Sometimes, I get to see the login page every 5 minutes. Who wants to surf the internet when the login page is so beautiful?

Cool right? This is IDA's master plan for a globally connected and intelligent nation by 2015. By covering Singapore with a totally unreliable WIFI network. This is indeed Uniquely Singapore. Singapore tourism board can even put on their website that say "Surf internet on the go with wireless@sg which disconnects you randomly". I bet the tourist will all be impressed by the frequent random disconnection. They don't get to experience this kind of excitement back in their country.

And IDA is planning to roll out more services on wireless@sg. Services like VOIP. Imagine wireless@sg disconnecting the phone call when your wife starts nagging at you? Cool right?

I suggest IDA look into ways to link life support machine to wireless@sg. The person on this kind of life support machine will die once the network get disconnected. Imagine linking wireless@sg to Vivian Balakrishnan's life support machine. I bet IDA will surely do something to wireless@sg to make it less exciting and more reliable. Don't you think so? Seriously, I strongly believe that if your survival depends on wireless@sg, then you might as well end your life now.

PS: You may ask, why Vivian Balakrishnan? Cause he is the Second Minister For Information, Communications And The Arts. And also that ass who refuse to give the poor additional $30 per month.

PS again: DK's twin brother decided to blog this entry after DK lost count of the number of times he got disconnected from wireless@sg at Starbucks today.

Too Long For Twitter, Too Short For Blog #8

Blog day
OK, someone registered a website and declared that 31 Aug is blog day. And what do you do on blog day? You blog. Haha. OK, seriously, they say you should recomment 5 blogs on that day.

But who are they to decide 31 Aug is blog day. Hmmmm....

Lip Syncing To The Song
Didn't know that there is actually such a song.

Feel like doing lip syncing someday too. :D

Hardest question on earth

The hardest question that facebook's compare people can ask.

How do I make a choice?

Problem with wireless@sg
Why doesn't IDA believe that the wireless@sg sucks?

Seriously, if I ever have a good video camera, I'll take video of my laptop screen when using wireless@sg. Then you guys will see how bad the random disconnection is.

Handphone back from hospital
Send my handphone to repair because the navigation joystick is having some problems. I heard that it is a common problem with Sony Ericsson phones that are using joystick. No complains since I really love my K800i. One of the best phone I ever had.

When I got back my phone, the technical support guy told me they changed the entire motherboard. I was pretty shocked. He said that the joystick is connected to the motherboard, and the only way they can replace it is to replace the whole motherboard. Hmmmm.... You mean everyone who go to the service centre with joystick problem, you will change the entire motherboard? Wow.... that isn't very cost efficient leh.

So I got back my phone with a new motherboard. Errr.... in short, I only got back my casing. The rest of the phone is brand new.

Why don't you guys just give me a new phone instead? Hahahaha.....

What does wireless@sg really mean?

I got this screen instead of the usual login screen yesterday after logging on to the wireless@sg network at Bishan J8.

Its appears to me that they didn't set up the wireless access point properly and we are being send to the admin page. And no, I can't access internet as I haven't got the chance to login yet.

We all know that the word 'Google' is a verb meaning to use the Google search engine to obtain information on the Internet. It was officially added to Oxford English Dictionary (OED) on June 15, 2006, and to the 11th edition of the Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary in July 2006.

Sometimes, I wonder.... if the word wireless@sg has a verb meaning, what would it be?

I guess wireless@sg as a verb can best used to describe "Without internet connection". After all, I've already lost count of the number of times I see a wireless@sg access point yet still can't log onto the internet.

How to be a mobile warrior using wireless@sg?

I finally found a seat at Coffee Bean after going round in circles. It’s hard to find a seat at café along Orchard road on a Saturday evening. I placed my bag on the chair and went over to the counter to order my favorite Ultimate Mocha Ice Blended (with whip cream of course). Waited patiently for the barista to prepare my drug while constantly looking back to ensure nobody snatch my bag while I’m away. I collected my drink, settle down comfortably at my seat and boot up my laptop, telling myself that I should be using a Mac when the Window logo appears. My laptop detected a wireless@sg network nearby and connects to it instantly. I open my internet browser and....

OK, at this point, I’m supposed say that I login using my Singnet userid and got connected to the internet, hassle free. Or rather, that what the IDA and the media want you to think you can do with wireless@sg. But back to reality, I encountered something that most wireless@sg user would have experienced before. Able to connect to wireless@sg but no connection to internet. Couldn’t load the login page. Just the standard default internet explorer screen telling you that the server could not be found.

If you got a WIFI finder, my advice to you is to throw it away. It’s useless with wireless@sg. Having the WIFI network doesn’t always guarantee you connection to the internet.

I tried disconnecting/reconnecting to the network several times and refresh my internet browser repeatedly. After 5 minutes or so, I finally get to the login page. I proceed to login and got connected to the internet. So I checked my email and replied to some comments on my blog. I wanted to access google word and spreadsheet to update some documents that my friends had created, only to discover that I was disconnected from wireless@sg for no reason. And I couldn’t reconnect again. I give up.

This is the life of a mobile warrior using wireless@sg. Pathetic... Sigh.

IDA and the media want you to believe that you can do many wonderful stuff using wireless@sg. Have they ever tried using it? Or are they too blind to see that the infrastructure is full of problems? How to be a mobile warrior using wireless@sg? If you are reading this entry hoping to find an answer, then I’m sorry to say that I have no solution at all. It is impossible to be a mobile warrior using wireless@sg.

I miss the pre-wireless@sg days. I used to subscribe to Singnet’s hotspot at around $10 per month. It’s rather cheap and it guarantees you connection to the internet. In fact, I don’t remember a single occasion where I couldn’t get connected to Singnet’s hotspot. I was a happy customer.

But everything changes after wireless@sg rollout on 1 Dec 2006. In case you don’t know, Singnet changed all its existing hotspot to wireless@sg. It became a free service. Existing paying customer like me are converted to premium service where we are promised a higher connection speed. It was the beginning of my nightmare as a mobile warrior.

I was at Starbuck on 1 Dec 2006, the day when they switched to wireless@sg. The usual singnet hotspot is replaced by a wireless@sg network. I could connect to wireless@sg, but I can’t get to the login page. I tried calling the technical support but they didn’t find anything wrong with the access point I’m using. I gave up after 15 minutes on the line with the technical support. I forgive them since that was the first day Singnet switched over to wireless@sg.

But things didn’t improve after the initial launch. The wireless@sg network is too unreliable until today. They are supposed to setup wireless@sg access point at several place like AMK and Jurong East, but it is still not there yet. They claim that Orchard Road will be completely covered with wireless@sg too. But only selected places has access. And at some places where there is wireless@sg, the connection is just horrible. Sometimes you totally don’t have any internet connection. Sometimes you keep getting disconnected every few minutes for no reason. It’s just frustrating. And to add to the anger, I’m actually a paying customer. I don’t see why I should be paying for the service. There is simply no benefit.

In the end, I decided to cancel my subscription and join the surf for free crowd. The standard of service is still as bad as before. But at least I’m not paying anything for it.

I don’t know what exactly is the problem with wireless@sg. Is it because too many people are connected to one access point? Or they didn’t maintain their access point well? All I know is, if you want to be a mobile warrior, you cannot rely on wireless@sg. Forget about what IDA and the media said about wireless@sg. It’s all an illusion. Wireless@sg is not unreliable at all. If you work on the move, get a proper connection. You can never count on wireless@sg. Sometimes it’s there, sometimes it’s not. M1’s mobile broadband is a better solution. But the cheapest plan cost $22 per month.

If I’m not wrong, IDA wanted to roll out some premium services on wireless@sg like video streaming, VOIP and web conferencing. Wake up guys. You can’t even surf net properly on wireless@sg, how do you roll out those premium services on this unreliable infrastructure?

This entry is written entirely on Microsoft Word 2003 at a Coffee Bean along Orchard Road with wireless@sg connection nearby but no internet connection.

Wireless@sg ROCKS. Or rather, that’s what the IDA and the media wants you to think.

Ping.sg meetup #2 - Essential Brew

We had our ping.sg 2nd meetup today yesterday at Essential Brew. It was a great meetup session.

Just like the Nexus meet up, everyone was late. Haha. Not a good habbit leh. NTT was the earliest, follow by me and Uzyn. We did had a good chat before the rest arrived. We WIFI-ed using the free wireless@sg network, which strangely doesn't requires us to login. Hmmmm.... wonder why.

We ordered Dragonwell tea (龙井). Essential brew is not a place to be in for a coffee lover. There is ONLY ONE coffee drink there. JUST ONE! I almost died of coffee deprivation. Yes, I know essential brew is a tea place, but at least give us more coffee choices mah. Maybe add latte and mocha lah. PLEASEEEEEeee......

Kevin came around 7pm and was shocked that there was only 3 of us. We suppose to meet at 6pm. Well, everyone is super late. Oh well. The 4 of us started ordering dinner when Ridzuan came.... in army uniform!!!

You see, Ridz said he is will put on camo if tstar come. But he later discovered that he doesn't have camo cream at home. So he came in army uniform. *Faint* Everyone (except me) thought he was joking when he posted on twitter. And he didn't bring along another set of clothles to change. You guys should see tstar's reaction when she arrives and saw ridz in uniform. Too bad nobody got it down on video. Wasted.

Clapping tree and rinaz arrives shortly. The dinner was so-so. I had smoke salmon pasta. I should had ordered fish n chips. It look much better and the portion is bigger. We had a good chat during dinner. Ebie, the 1/5 owner of Essential brew and also a ping.sg user came over and had a chat with us. He was rather busy that day with the place full house and a birthday party going on.

kevin and ntt left at around 830pm. If they stayed for another 10 minutes or so, they would have met the chio chio de aunty and her 'boyfriend'. It was great meeting them. Funny thing is, some of the pingster thought that I've met CCDA before. But in actual fact, today was the first time I met her.

Ebie was nice to bring out some desert for us to try. On the house. :)

Can't remember what is this call. Panna Cotta or something? Anyway, I also don't know what is it. But it tasted good.

I think this is call Plateau Serenade ice cream bombe. Very nice. Like it a lot. There is even chocolate flowing out when you cut it open. WAH. But hor, 1 plate 8 people share. NOT ENOUGH. Nevermind, I'll go essential brew myself to try this again. Their blog says it will be out of stock by June 07. OMG. I must go back quick before it is gone.

We left at around 10:30pm. Thank Ebie for the great desert! Love it. (And I think I'll need to go for a jog tomorrow because of that. haha.) Most of the guys left after that, but uzyn, ridz and I pop over to the starbucks next door for a cup of coffee before heading home.

It was a great evening. Had lots of funs and laughters. Great meeting each and everyone of you. Hope to meet up more often. :D

Frm left to right: Ebie, Uzyn, clapping tree, rinaz, tstar, Sgt Ridz, chio chio de aunty, some decaying object

Wait.... where is Estee huh? Thought she say she is coming? :P

Wireless what sg?

It has been 4 months since we have been promised free wifi across Singapore. But the wireless@sg is not as smooth sailing as the media reported. Not many new hotspot has been setup. Those major hotspot are not ready yet. Most of the wireless@sg point you see are existing hotspot that used to charge money, now changed to free.

Being free has a price to pay. Free means more people are accessing, resulting in slowness and more downtime.

Its not that I'm very far from the access point. My signal bar is half full. Yet I get disconnected frequently. And even when I'm connected, it doesn't mean that I can surf the net. Sometimes I'm just connected to the network but not to internet.

Its frustrating. Why the heck am I still paying $10 a month for such unreliable service? The Singnet hotspot used to be quite reliable before wireless@sg era. I don't remember having problems. Now that it become wireless@sg, it became problematic.

Why is paying customer sharing the same router as non-paying customer? How can Singnet ensure that paying customer get faster download speed? Why should paying customer suffer when the network is congested with non paying customer? Shouldn't paying customer get priority?

I think I'm going to cancel my wireless@sg plus subscription for sure. Wireless what sg? Its all overhype. Too many people access, too little bandwidth. End up you get tons of wireless access point but none able to get you online. I wonder how will our neighbour do with their Wimax implementation.

Malaysia's telecoms regulator has named four newcomers as winners of Wimax wireless high speed internet licences.
The winning bidders were Bizsurf Sdn Bhd, MIB Comm Sdn Bhd, Redtone-CNX Broadband Sdn Bhd and Asiaspace Dotcom Sdn Bhd.

The firms are expected to invest up to 300 million ringgit ($85.7m; £43.9m) within the service's first three years.

Hope their coverage at JB is wide enough that it can cover some parts of Singapore too.

I'm actually eyeing at M1 broadband. The cheapest plan is at $22 at month. Hmmm... worth considering....

How hub?

StarHub customers can get free access to Wireless@SG services through a Memorandum of Understanding reached between StarHub and QMax Communications. This collaboration will see QMax Communications extending its Free Basic Wireless@SG accounts to all StarHub customers. At the same time, QMax Wireless@SG subscribers can also access all StarHub hotspots for free.

Wireless silence

In search of wireless@sg....

Where got again?

Appearantly, there seems to be a delay in the wireless@sg rollout. Places like Ang Mo Kio are suppose to be wireless@sg ready by 1 Jan 2007. But they aren't. IDA website has also removed the PDF map detailing the wireless@sg coverage. All we can find now is the list of location that were wireless@sg launch on 1 Dec 2006. These are actually existing wireless hotspot by Singnet, Qmax and iCell, but renamed to wireless@sg on 1 Dec to claim that we launched it 1 month ahead of schedule.

What is happening? Where are the big ones?

There is no announcement. Or did I miss the announcement? Or was it not suppose to be ready by 1 Jan 2007?

Why was there a fanfare when they managed to launch part of the wireless@sg on 1 Dec and yet it is so quiet when they miss the 1 Jan date?

I mean, I don't mind if its not ready, but the least they can do is announce that there is a delay.

Wireless Helpdesk

Couldn't log on to the internet at my Oasis.

Since I'm still a paying customer of their outdoor wireless surf, I decided to call the Singnet helpdesk to get them to fix the problem.

After telling the tech support that I couldn't log into their outdoor wireless surf, he asked me to check some setting on my laptop. I asked if he need to know my location first, he say no need. So ok, I followed the instructions, he couldn't find anything wrong.

On the line for 15 minutes and he still couldn't find anything wrong with my setting. Then the tech support guy asked me to reset my laptop. That is when I decided that I had enough. I asked if he ever considered that it could be their network problem, but he insist there wasn't any report of network failure.

Then I told him it also couldn't be my laptop because I log in to another network to get the telephone number to the helpdesk. That is when he decided he need my location.

Told him my location and he did a check and said that his system shows that the network is working.

Seeing this is going nowhere, I told him that his tracking system have error and hang up the phone. Useless anyway. There is nothing that guy can do.

I'll just stick to the slower, unstable but free network. Perhaps I should consider canceling my outdoor wireless surf with Singnet. After all, the wireless@sg is coming soon right?

(Wireless@sg suppose to start from 1st Dec. But I've been roaming all over the place and still can't find it. Maybe still have some problem.)

Welcome all IMF/World Bank Delegates

Tag:

Singapore is playing host to IMF meeting this year. Quite a big hoo-ah event. The govt really going all out to impress the delegates from around the world. OK, there are a bit of inconvenience. Esp the road closure. Its going to be a big pain in the ass for those who drive to Suntec area.

But the IMF meeting does have a lot of advantages to Singaporeans. It creates jobs. It attracts 16000 delegates from around the world to Singapore to eat, drink and shop.

And because of the IMF meeting, some roads have been smoothen. Esp the expressway between Changi Airport to Suntec. Its the road that all the delegates need to use. And extra effort has been made for the past few months to ensure the roads in tip top condition. Try driving along ECP this few days if you are free. I did that yesterday and was surprised that the whole road look so new. As if it is a new expressway. They also repainted the flyovers and CTE tunnel. The whole place look so new now.

And if you are around suntec area, remember to go to the overhead bridge between Suntec and Citylink. They planted a lot of flowers there. Never in my life have I seen so much flowers along the roads of Singapore. Never. Its nice to have those flowers around. The place look alot nicer. There are sunflowers too. Wanted to take a picture, but I'm afraid the police patrolling nearby might question me.

Oh, I'm now at Millenia Walk using the free WIFI. Yeap. Its call Wireless@SG. This WIFI network will be free for all to use for the month of sept. Cool huh? Without the IMF meeting, we won't have this at all.

I guess we are already seeing the benifits of the IMF meeting even before the meeting start. Thanks to the wayang-ness of our govt.

Hello, IMF and World Bank Delegates. Welcome to Singapore. Please come more often. Maybe every year.
Oh ya, I don't mind smiling for free WIFI. :D
