Just excuses

It has been a week since I've made up my mind on the next step to take. I'm grateful for all the comments, suggestions and word of encouragements by everyone. I value all the comments in my blog, msn, sms and face to face meetup. But I'm sorry if I didn't take your advice.

Several things happen last week. I almost wanted to submit my resignation letter on Monday. But I thought maybe I should submit on the first day of the month. Then HR send out an email to inform us that the company will be giving out a special bonus at the end of June as the company is doing well. Its not a large sum of money. But that amount can last me for at least a few weeks. So I told myself I'll resign only after the bonus.

A lot of people gave me their opinions when they knew my decision. A lot of them advice me to take option 1 or 3 instead of 2. But my mind was rather fixed on option 2. I tried to explain why I'm taking option 2 to everyone who spoke to me.

And I thought I made up my mind until I had dinner with someone recently and we discuss my plans.

She said that my plans of taking up freelance and expanding towards that area is good, but do I really need to quit my current job? Do I really need to go unemployed for several months just to pick up the skill? I could still hold a full time job and study for the things if I manage my time well. And she said that I should use this time to learn about time management. Cause if I don't then I'll fail in everything I do in the future.

I tried to explain to her the reason for quitting. As I was explaining, I suddenly notice something. I just wanted to get out of the job that I hated. I want to go into web programming. But I don't need to be unemployed to pick up the skill. All those explanations are just excuses. Excuses for me to get out of my current job fast. If I hate the job, just find a new job.

I didn't go home straight after the dinner and coffee. Instead, I went for a stroll by the Singapore river bay. I kept thinking of the conversation that we had. It will be a big challenge. To continue to work while picking up a skill and doing freelance. And I'm still doing my part time degree course too. But its a good chance for me to learn the life lesson of time management.

And I come up with new plans on what I plan do to:

Pick up web programming skills
Take up some freelance project.
Built a network and portfolio.

Do all these while keeping myself employed. But I should really change a job.

Its going to be tough. Especially when I'm still doing my part time degree. But if I can't handle this, I won't be able to handle the greater things that I'm aiming for in the future.

Unemployment makes it harder for one to get a job, being employed actually gives u a higher chance to get a new job. In anycase, gd luck in time management. :)

It will be tough. Hang in there, and you shall reap the benefits of it all ... Just my 2 cents worth

Nicole: True also. Cause everyone is telling me the employer will surely ask if you are unemployed for too long.

I guess in life we do come across many such situations where it's "damned if you do and damned if you don't". These catch 22 sitautions have been plaguing my whole life. Perhaps at some point of time, you will begin to see the light of what's best for you.

dunno leh, my view rather simplistic one:

you hate your job. u've been wanting to get out of it. damn, just get out of it already! i think u'll be happier then.

cool insider: I hope I really see the light soon.

tstar: I guess I need to find a job before getting out.

Glad that you've sort out your real needs. If that's the case, I agree that the best option is to look for another job instead of just quitting. Your real reason is that you hate your current job.

Erm... by the way, why do I get the feeling that you paid heed to a ladies' opinion more and if the same advice were to be made by a guy, you wouldn't have listened? :p

cobalt: Maybe its the way she gave me her views. She sort of made me see the real issue behind everything.

Nothing to do with the gender.

Haha! I was just teasing lah... Your answer so serious. :p

dk, why are u in your current job when you hate it so much?

maybe there was one time that you liked it. maybe try to remember why you liked it or applied it in the first place, maybe if there is, the reason you liked it might come back. :-)

some people quit and look for jobs, other look for new jobs then quit. I know both kinds of people, and both works equally well....

just by blabbering :-p

Cobalt: Must be serious for that remark. My reputation at stake leh. Wait everyone think I'm a buaya. Cannot mah. So must come out and defend myself. :P

KM: My job profile evolved over the years. No longer doing the things that I enjoy now.

Hey Dk: was facing your dilemma couple of months back - I think tt you have been offered lotsa advice from the ppl ard you - shan't add my 2 cents then.

In the end I decided tt life's short - if we spend too much time thinking about what we should do, we become too preoccupied about the future to live in the present.

Bite the bullet, make a decision, just be prepared to accept the consequences of your decision. Be happy. :) Take care ya!

MnM: Yeap. Life is indeed too short. And suddenly I discovered that I've don't have much time left on earth to do the things I want to do. (Haha.... sound like I'm dying soon)

Aren't we all too preoccupied by past and future that we don't enjoy the present?

If you are serious about doing web stuff, and that you really like it, then burn all bridges so not give any excuse of giving up.

Only when you sacrifice something, then you know if you really serious about it.

David: EEEeeeerrrr.... it takes a lot of courage to burn down all bridges.

Hi dk, I don't know you well and never seen you before. Nevertheless, I think it might be encouraging to send you some cheers. Hope you will realise your dreams. Go for it dk!

oceanskies79: Thanks. :)

Don't worry. Singapore so small. Sure got chance to meet.
