The door, the lock and the bell

I don't know if I've mentioned this before. My desk in the new office is rather close to the door. As we are in a IT dept, there is no chio bu receptionist sitting near the door to welcome visitors each day. So its those people sitting close to the door that open the door when visitors come. The admins are sitting closer to the door, but they are seldom at their desk.

I don't mind opening the door once in a while. But we have nearly 200 employees in the office and there are alot of visitors each day. I cannot keep walking to the door whenever a visitor press the door bell. I still need to work.

I'm sick of opening the door already. I decided to ignore the door bells. I'm not going to open the door. Not even when you press the door bell repeatly.

Call me selfish. But shouldn't you be calling the person whom you are visiting to open the door for you instead?

The purpose of the lock is to prevent unauthorised people from entering the office.

But how am I suppose to know if someone is really a visitor or a thief?
Am I suppose to question them to see who they meeting?
Do I have to check their staff pass or note down their NRIC?

So far, we been opening the door for anyone who press the door bell and allowing them to enter without any question. Then why install a lock in the 1st place? Since any tom dick or harry can enter the office, why not just leave the main door open?

What is the purpose of the door, the lock and the bell?

Long time no jog

Tag:

A part of my body told me that I seriously need to go for a jog.
No prize for guessing correctly which part is it.

Its been a long time since I last went for a jog. No stamina. Need more time to re-built my stamina.

Labels:

Whatever happened to personal privacy?

Has it ever occurred to you that someone not close to you come and asked you something very personal and expect you to answer it? And when you tries to ignore the question, they just won't let you go. No matter how hard you try to shake them off, they just won't give up until you tell them the answer.

Its not as if you are someone close to me. Even if you are, some things are not meant to be spoken. But you are just a friend. Or colleague.

Do you expect me to answer all the private questions?

In the first place, are we that close that warrant you to ask such personal questions?

I guess it doesn't really matter to you. All you wanted is some saucy news so that you can exchange during your next gossip session. But aren't these abit too personal? And do I really know you that well to even talk about such topics?

Whatever happened to personal privacy?

Why should I answer your questions? When I refuse to give you an answer, isn't it loud and clear that I have no intention of telling you at all? Why do you keep asking and asking? Have you ever asked yourself, are we that close to talk about such personal issue in the first place?

You are not someone close to me. And I'm not a sideshow freak. So why don't you just shut up and mind your own bloody business.

Why is it that there are so many busybody around me? Its not as if they are asking all these things because they care. They are just asking for the entertainment value. If they really care, they would had asked what is the impact of asking such questions. They don't know how much their questions is affecting me now. They don't care. They just want the entertainment.

THEIR ENTERTAINMENT AT MY EXPENSE.

Ganna Spammed

My blog was being spammed.... badly...

Got 17 emails telling me that I got comments on my blog. But all of them are spam. Argh.... What is the problem with all these spammers? Do they really think people will buy from them? I will avoid using your product and visiting your page when I ganna spam by you. Don't you get it?

I don't want to turn on the word verification because I find that it is troublesome to leave comments. Besides, the spam problem wasn't that bad for the past few months. But look like its back now.

Will need some time to clean up the spam.....

Friend in need

I seriously don't mind helping friends. But sometimes, I think it is abit too much that they ONLY come find me when they need my help. And when there is nothing, they just disappear without a word.

Is this still friends? Only find you when they need your help. They never call to meet up for a chat or coffee. Or simple SMS to ask how you doing lately? Why is it whenever I see your name on my phone, I knew there is something wrong with your PC?

Sometimes I wonder will you be there if I ever need your help..... I don't want to have a chance to find out.....

“Eat with Your family” Day

Got this email from HR few days ago.

The Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports (MCYS) and Centre for Fathering are organising a nationwide “Eat with Your family” on 26 May 2006. We want to encourage all our employees to take time off this Friday to enjoy dinner with their families. Where possible, managers should call it a day at 5pm on that day.

Its nice to work in a company that supports most of govt's policy.

But here is a question.... What if your family members' company doesn't support that policy? You go home early also no use right? haha.

30mins and I'll be knocking off. :D

Pink Floyd - Wish you were here

Pink Floyd - Wish you were here

So, so you think you can tell
Heaven from Hell,
Blue skies from pain.
Can you tell a green field
From a cold steel rail?
A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?

Did they get you to trade
Your heroes for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
Cold comfort for change?
Did you exchange
A walk on part in the war,
For a lead role in a cage?

How I wish, how I wish you were here.
We're just two lost souls
Swimming in a fish bowl,
Year after year,
Running over the same old ground.
Have we found?
The same old fears.
Wish you were here.

Turtle hatchlings found in Singapore

I was kinda surprised when I read this news. Turtle actually came to Singapore to lay eggs? Wow....

Baby turtles rescued and returned to sea off Changi

A group of roller bladers had an unusual sighting at East Coast Park beach on Tuesday night which sparked off a little search that lasted about three hours.
The group checked the drains and combed the fields in the hope of rescuing turtle hatchlings which were making their way towards the jogging track and away from the sea.

The initial search party of seven people soon grew in size with volunteers from the Raffles Museum, Nature Society and other NGOs joining in.

After three hours, a total of 76 baby turtles were rescued from the track, drains and shore and released back into the waters off Changi Beach.

Rescuers said two of the hatchlings died. One will be preserved and added to the Raffles Museum's Zoological Reference Collection.

Source: CNA

But something that kept me wondering. Why did the turtle hatchlings head towards the land and not the sea? I thought it is basic instinct that they head towards the sea. What happen?

I did a little search and found this.

Light can disorientate both the female turtle and the hatchlings. Nesting females avoid brightly lit beaches while hatchlings, attracted to the light, will head towards it instead of the sea.

Source: Arbec Turtle Conservation

Hmm..... Maybe the walkway lights confused the hatchlings.

Luckily for the 76 hatchlings, they were spotted and rescued.... don't know if the others will be so lucky or not.....

Exam over....

Those who know me in poly would know that I'm quite good in programming. I always score high marks for my programming project. But I never got a AD for any modules. Because my grades were being pulled down during the exam.

You see, I'm a practical guy. I learn things thru hands-on. I do things better when you give me a compiler and a sample rather than read from the books and notes. I still remember sometime in poly year 2 when I keep skipping COBOL lectures and tutorial. When assignment is here, I simply borrow a few sample tutorial answer from my friend, try out the coding with the compiler and I got an A for the assignment. I learn things better when I do trial and error.

But I'm never good at theory. I can write wonderful programs, but when you ask me to explain the concept in words, I'm dead. That's why exams always pull my grades down.

But why exam? Why should we be graded based on a 3 hour written exam? What can an exam proof? Can it proof that you understand the subject? Can it proof that you know the concept? What skill do we gain from taking exam?

Most people study for exam by memorising the textbook. It is not the understanding of the subject. Its how much you can memorise. And trust me, I've seen people memorising the textbook WORD BY WORD, PAGE BY PAGE. You can even give them the page number and they can tell you what is the 3rd word on the 2nd paragraph!!!

This is the type of student that exam are breeding us into. It test us on our memory. On how much you can remember and how much you can throw into the answer booklet within that few hours. End of the day, its a test on memory, not on the subject.

Then there are some people who study past year paper and try to spot questions. In fact, tutors also encourage students to do that. The revision lecture will most likely contains questions and answer of previous exams and the tutors will often give his/her predictions of the type of questions that will come out. But, are we testing our knowedge of the subject or are we testing how well we can spot questions? Have you ever wonder why those 'O' and 'A' level 10 years series are selling like hotcakes?

Something is really wrong. Why are we being tested on our memory and skill of spotting questions when it should be testing our knowedge and how we apply it? I've seen people who score an A for programming subjects but still struggle with a "do while" loop.

So I went into the exam hall today with not much confidence. The whole entire paper is on theory. There is no programming or whatsoever. Just theory, plain old theory. And for that 3 hours, we are expected to throw on the answer booklet whatever we can remember from the 4 months of lessons.

Name 4 applications for XML
eeerr.... I can't remember.... I think the notes say.... eerrr... skip first, come back later....

List down the 3 difference between DOM and SAX
AH!!! I remember this....
DOM is conceptually more difficult compared to SAX.
DOM is more readable and maintainable compared to SAX.
DOM need more memory for processing.

PERFECT ANSWER!! 6 marks.

But wait.... What is DOM? What is SAX?
What are the uses? When do you need to use it? How do you apply them?

I don't know. I can score perfect 6 marks for questions related to DOM and SAX, but I don't know what the heck is it.

But then, who cares? So long as you get the marks for that question, who cares if you don't know what is it?

Barista conversation

I don't know how many people notice, but Starbucks' barista will try to chat with you while you are waiting for them to prepare your drink. Don't really remember coffee bean's barista doing that.

But seriously, there isn't anything to talk about with a barista.....

Went to MW Starbucks today. I know I've mentioned that I prefer coffee bean many times, but then, the only decent coffee joint at MW is Starbucks and TCC. And I've been to TCC last week. So I decided to go Starbucks. If only they have a coffee bean at MW too.

Anyway, the starbucks is rather empty. Maybe its weekday and near closing hour. I just wanted a cup of coffee to destress myself. So the barista tried to chat with me while preparing the cafe mocha.

Barista: How is your day?

Me: eeerr....

At that quick second, I wonder.... should I really tell her that I'm having a terrible day? I got a exam to take and my revision is not going fine. I got my dad and sis bugging me whole night and the reason why I'm at starbucks is because I badly need a cup of coffee to ease myself.

So you asking me how is my day?

The frank answer is, today is a rotten day. But then, so what if I tell you that I have a bad day? Will that coffee be FOC? Will you put extra whip cream on top? Or will you sit at my table and chat a few minutes with me?

I doubt so....

Me: Oh, its a fine day.

Information

Unhappiness in relationships, according to Dr. Gary Chapman, is often due to the fact that we speak different love languages. Sometimes we don't understand our partner's requirements, or even our own. We all have a "love tank" that needs to be filled in order for us to express love to others, but there are different means by which our tank can be filled, and there are different ways that we can express love to others.

人言可畏 2

I'm still sick and tired of all the people talking and gossiping after so long.

Why do I have to constantly NOT DO the things I want to do to AVOID the gossip?
So many things I wanted to do but I can't. So many things I wanted to write in my blog but I can't. So many words I wanted to say but I can't.

I'm tired. Tired of avoiding all the talk and gossip.

Why can't I do the things I wanted to do freely? Why am I always placed under the scrutiny of everybody's eyes? Why is it every action I do will always be gossip by everyone mother's daughter and son in the world?

Why can't everyone just SHUT THE FUCK UP?

Argh. Leave me alone.....

Study outside

Exams are coming.

I can't study at home. It has been a proven fact. There are just too many distractions at home. TV, Radio, Bed, Computer and food. I can't concentrate on my studies at home.

That why I always go out to study during exam period. That is the only way that I can really sit down and study. Never mind about the people chit chatting around me. I can still concentrate while they are talking. Their noise distractions are nothing compared to the temptation of my bed.

You see, when you are out there, there is nothing you can do but study. And study is what I need to do now.....

The Wrong Guy

Watch the clip 1st before reading futher....

Found anything wrong with the interview??

What if I tell you, that this person is actually there for a job interview, and was mistaken for the actual expert and drag on live TV?

Don't believe?

Read this.

Guy Goma, a graduate from the Congo, appeared on the news channel in place of an IT expert after a mix-up.

But Mr Goma, who was wrongly identified in the press as a taxi driver, was really at the BBC for a job interview.

Mr Goma said his appearance was "very stressful" and wondered why the questions were not related to the data support cleanser job he applied for.

The mix-up occurred when a producer went to collect the expert from the wrong reception in BBC Television Centre in West London.

Apperantly, they wanted to interview Guy Kewney, editor of Newswireless.net. End up, they got Guy Goma.

Indeed the wrong guy.

Pot and kettle, all are black

Did I mentioned that my new office table is near the door and next to the walkway?

This mean, a lot of people walking pass me everyday. And people don't just keep quiet when they walk. They like to talk..... and I overheard a lot of things....

Overheard 2 aunties' conversation while they were walking along the walkway behind me.....
Aunty 1: "I don't this new office. A lot of people. Then they keep walking around and distracting me."
Aunty 2: "Ya lor, then a lot of talking, very noisy. I also cannot concentrate on my work."

At this moment, I feel like turning around and tell them that THEY ARE also distracting me by walking around and talking.

Talk about the pot calling the kettle black.

Be careful when warning about the consequences

I read the news as if its the comic recently.

So, the police found that Gomez did commit the offence of using threatening words towards a public servant. They invited him over for coffee 3 times regarding a short conversation at the election dept. I hope they are using those cheap $0.80 coffee instead of those expensive espresso coffee from Starbucks or Coffee Bean.

So, he is guilty of criminal intimidation. But they not going to charge him. Instead, he is just given a stern warning.

Come on, if he is really guilty, charge him. Bring him to court. Fined him to claim back those coffee money! All you police officers' salary and money to buy coffee are from the taxpayers. How can you all anyhow waste the money?

Do you know what's the implication? Something must happen.

Opps. I'm sorry. I was distracted. Please accept my sincere apologies if my actions caused any distress or confusion.

Damn.... Must remind myself to take extra care when talking to public servants in the future. Cannot warned a public servant of any "consequences". Its considered criminal intimidation. Can fine $5000 and jail up to 1 year.

Imagine, 1 year without broadband......

Broken Arrow explained

Ok, think its time to reveal what does that broken arrow stand for.

And the answer is......

I've moved

I've moved to another other office.

Been pre-warned that we will be shifting office for at least a year. And it finally happened. It actually took them 1 year to plan the big move. Can't really blame them, they have hundred odd people to move and many dept to coordinate with.

I'm surprised that I managed to squeeze all my personal stuff into the small box provided.

The new office is huge. Very huge. Luckily for me, my table is rather close to the entrance. In fact, you would be able to see my seat from the door. And the interesting thing is, I can see most of the office while sitting at my seat. This way, I can know who is at his/her table and purposely ignoring my email. Haha.

Nobody can hide from me.

They said that its about 100m from 1 end of the office to the other end. I kid you not. Just look at the picture.

A very long corridor. If it is really 100m, then we can run up and down 24 times to train for our 2.4km run. Haha.

The only thing I don't like about my seat is that the walkway and meeting room behind me. A lot of people keep walking pass my table and making alot of noise. I guess I'll listen to my MP3 more.

Oh ya.... Did I mentioned that I need to travel 1hr and 15min to reach office now? Argh....

Bryan Adams - Heaven

Oh - thinkin' about all our younger years
There was only you and me
We were young and wild and free
Now nothin' can take you away from me
We've been down that road before
But that's over now
You keep me comin' back for more

Baby you're all that I want
When you're lyin' here in my arms
I'm findin' it hard to believe
We're in heaven
And love is all that I need
And I found it here in your heart
It isn't too hard to see
We're in heaven

Oh - once in your life you find someone
Who will turn your world around
Bring you up when you're feelin' down
Ya-nothin' could change what you mean to me
Oh there's lots that I could say
But just hold me now
Cause our love will light the way

Baby you're all that I want
When you're lyin' here in my arms
I'm findin' it hard to believe
We're in heaven
And love is all that I need
And I found it here in your heart
It isn't too hard to see
We're in heaven

I've been waitin' for so long
For somethin' to arrive
For love to come along
Now our dreams are comin' true
Through the good times and the bad
Ya - I'll be standin' there by you

Ramly Burger

Who would had thought that wrapping a thin layer of egg over the burger patty would become such a big hit.

Behold, Ramly Burger. Available at your nearest Pasar Malam.

Plain water cost 50 cent

We ordered 2 main courses and 2 cakes. Yet you still want to charge us 50 cent for a glass of plain water.

Yes, you put the plain water in a nice glass, serve to us and wash the cup after we left. But it is just a glass of plain water. Most prob directly from the tap. I'm a paying customer. Why should I be paying 50 cent for a glass of newater?

And your food taste salty. Your marble cheese cake and chocolate banana cake are great, but which cafe serves cakes without plain water?

I think I'll go Siglap Cheesecake cafe next time.

Ministry of Education Lowers ‘A1’ Grade to 66.6 Marks

Following the elections, one of the bold new moves by the Ministry of Education is to lower the ‘A1’ distinction grade from 75 marks to 66.6 marks.

“One of the complaints we kept hearing from citizens was how tough our exam system is and how everything in life depends on our exam results,” said Minister of Education Tarzan Shanmugaratnam. “Well, the Government is listening to the people, and to ease the pressure on our schoolchildren, we’ve decided that whoever scores 66.6 marks will be considered to have scored a distinction instead of a mediocre B3 grade like before.”

66.13% is considered a strong mandate?

Elections over liao right? Can talk politics? I think so. :D
So here goes.

When Workers Party send a team of young cadidate to challange the Prime Minister, the media labelled them as Suicide Squat.

PAP's Chairman Mr Lim Boon Heng said he expect PM Lee to get at least 80 percent votes.

PM Lee says he would try his best to make sure it costs them some money. (Candidates who get less than 12.5 per cent of the vote will lose their $13,500 deposit.)

Everyone knows that the WP team will lose. But nobody expect them to get 33.87% of the votes. I mean, hey, this is the PM you all are against. And the 6 of you are unknowns 9 days ago. And you guys can get such high percentage?

To Abdul Salim, Gopal Krishnan, Han Su May, Lee Wai Leng, Melvin Tan and Yaw Shin Leong: Congrats. A job well done.

WP merely throw 6 newbies and they can manage to get 33% votes against the PM? What if the WP send a stronger team to AMK?

PM Lee said he wanted a strong mandate for this elections. His AMK GRC is the 3rd worst performing GRC after Aljunied and East Coast.

But he said that he is happy with this result.

Is 66.13% considered a strong mandate?

Prime Minister Sir, I think you better go back and think about this. Has Singapore given you a strong mandate? I don't think so.

Laugh if you want

Those who know me personally will roll on the floor and laugh after reading this post. But I'm not joking.....

I've been wanting to take up Salsa for quite some time.

Ok, laugh if you want.

Still thinking of taking up the lesson at Jitterbugs. But its kinda expensive and I'm afraid I might lose interest halfway.

Our company also have salsa course for employee. Its alot cheaper but heard that the instructor is not as good as the ones in Jitterbugs. Wanted to try taking lesson at my company first to try out, and if I'm really interested, then take up the more expensive course at Jitterbugs.

But then, I discovered that someone I don't like is taking the course too. And he is no longer an employee in the company. Argh.... Why is he still enjoying the benifits of employee when he already resigned more than 1 yr already? Argh.

Will not take up the course at company. The last thing I want to do is to learn to dance salsa with him around. Think I'll wait for the next class opening or try Jitterbugs.

Broken Arrow???

I've always wanted to take a picture of this ever since they did it few months ago.

Can you guess what does this road marking on the road stand for? The broken turn left ahead arrow is there for a purpose. Not because they ran out of paint.

Don't think you can find this sign on the advance theory book.

Those who are working at my company are not allowed to guess cause you all already know the answer. Give others a chance. :D

I will reveal the answer later.

Outwit, Outplay, Outbra

My dear fellow Singaporeans, we have been out-bra-ed by Cyprus!!!

Women on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus say they are poised to create the worlds longest chain of up to 100,000 bras to heighten breast cancer awareness on April 30.

A group of Dutch, British and Cypriot organizers plan to create a 90 km-long chain (55.9 mile) string of brassieres they hope will put them in the Guinness Book of Records.

Singapore presently holds the record for the longest chain of 79,000 bras.

Source: Yahoo News

Eeeerrrr..... Why did we even attempt to break that record in the 1st place?

Goodbye my camera

I think the camera is more or less dead.

The doctor at camera hospital said that he need to replaced the switch. He also mentioned that there was something wrong with the sensor when he did the repair. But after awhile, it was ok already. So he ask if it is ok to go ahead with the repair, I said yes.

I guess the sensor is just acting strangely since it was dropped on the floor and haven't been used for a few months. I guess it should be alright after awhile.

I was wrong.....

Went to collect the camera today. Managed to take a few picture at the shop. Still alright. The repairman reminded me about the sensor. I told him it is ok. After all, there is no problem when we tested it. But he said that he can only give me warranty on the switch, and he cannot cover other problems since the camera has been dropped on the floor.

The camera was still ok in the shop. But when I reach home, the sensor started giving me problem. The image appears darker and blur. Damn.... the sensor problem is back.

I guess there is nothing I can do now. The camera is more or less gone. Shouldn't had ask the person to go ahead with the repair. Made a wrong choice. Guess I was too eager to get it fixed.

Goodbye my camera. Thanks for all the happy memories you captured.....

They are back.... With flowers prints this time.
