Auld Lang Syne

I'm reading back what I've written on my blog for the whole year. It is always nice to spend the last day of the year looking back at all the things you have done for the year.

Actually, I did made a resolution for 2006. I almost forgotten about it. It wasn't in a list form, just 1 simple sentence. Seize every opportunity that comes by. And looking back, I guess I did seize every opportunity that comes by.

Although I did regret doing some of the things I've done in 2006, but at least I did tried doing it and not let the opportunity slip pass me.

It is better to regret doing than to regret not trying.

One of my resolution for 2007 is almost the same as the one I made for 2006. I guess life is about preparation meet opportunity.

So should old acquaintance be forgot and never brought to mind?
Of cause not. I'll remember 2006 as a year where I tried but lost....

What would you remember 2006 as?

Auld Lang Syne

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And auld lang syne?

For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne,
We'll tak a cup of kindness yet,
For auld lang syne!

Auld Lang Syne actually means old friends and days.

Lets put 2006 aside and welcome 2007 together. Happy New Year!!!

Connecting to Twitter

The Twitter badge at my sidebar has been causing some problems recently. The sidebar couldn't load completely whenever the twitter server is unreachable.

Graham Waldon from google was guest blogging on twitter blog recently and address on this issue. The solution was very simple. Simply put the last line of code at the bottom of the html. The last line are the codes responsible for connecting twitter. Since they are being run last, they will not affect the loading of the rest of the page.

I hope I'm doing the right thing.

Now.... all I need is twitter server to be down so that I can confirm what I'm doing is correct. Can someone at twitter pull the plug for 5 mins for me to test it out? haha. Just kidding.

UPDATE: It works! It really works!

Labels on classic template

One of the most interesting feature of blogger beta is the label function. As you can see, I've already began to use the labels.

But here the problem. I couldn't list all the labels I have on the side bar.

Update (9/14): You can now enter labels for your blog with a classic template. The labels will appear under the post body, and searching for labeled content works the same as for a layouts blog. However, there is no tag for adding all your labels to your sidebar. To use the sidebar labels widget, you'll have to switch to a Layouts template.

What this means is, you can create labels, but you cannot list all your labels UNLESS you convert to the new layout template. Converting to new layout template means that I have to redo my existing template. *HORROR*

What the heck is wrong with blogger? Why can't they just create tags for listing the labels just like the way they do for archives? Why isn't the classic template supported? Why must we be forced to change to the new layout to make full use of blogger beta's features?

Or is there a way to add label listing to classic template but I don't know?

New Year Resolutions 2007

I don't usually make resolutions in the past. Well, perhaps its time I start 1.

1) Read more
This is a big challenge. I'm the type that doesn't really like to read. I only read things that are on computers. It time I start reading more books and expand my knowledge.

2) Exercise more
I really need to keep fit. Its hard to imagine that I nearly got gold for my IPPT during NS times. I should exercise more in 2007 and keep fit. Shed a few KG too.

3) Save more money
I spend too much this year. And seriously, most of my money are being spend on good food. Those who knows me knows that I love good food. Its time I watch my spending and save more money.

4) Invest more
I've started putting some money into foreign currency fixed deposit in 2006. But strictly speaking, they are not really investments. More of higher interest savings. I think I should make my money work harder for me in 2007. Might be looking at REIT. Need to do more homework first. And wait for that stupid USD fixed deposit to mature.

5) Look out for opportunities
I know that I'm not in the place I want to stay forever. But I also don't really know exactly where I want to go. 2007 will be the year I look out for new opportunity.

Singapore Weather Twitter

Twitter has been fun lately. It still work via SMS when the underwater cables were broken.

Oh, if you are from Singapore, do add Singapore Weather as your friend. He will give you the weather forecast for the day. But its always raining this few days. So makes not much difference... I guess

Still wondering if it is a human or a bot behind.

Last working day of 2006

Finally reached the last working day of 2006.

The last week of the year is always very unproductive. Too many people clearing leave, making it hard to get anything done. And those who are not on leave are on holiday mood and bascially not doing much work. How did anyone managed to work this week anyway?

Oh well, I guess this picture explains how the whole week goes for me.

Get the joke?

Ganna Tomorrow-ed

I thought my counter gone haywire. 322 hits in a day. How could that be possible?

Until I found out that the traffic are coming from Tomorrow.sg. I ganna Tomorrow-ed. Scary. Never knew that tomorrow could bring in so much traffic.

Perhaps it would be more than 322 hits per day if not for the broken underwater cable.

I passed!!!

I couldn't find any words to express the joy I had when I received my results for my Artificial Intelligent module. I really thought I would fail.

But I pass. Its just a D+, but better than nothing. I was really mentally prepared for the worst actually. So glad that it is over.

Next semester is going to be a tough one. I'm taking 3 modules at 1 go. Got to cover the ground I lost as I only managed to take 1 module last semester.

Hurry hurry... I need that damn piece of paper..... fast!

回光反照

My desktop harddisk is alive again.

Strange. I couldn't bootup my computer on Tuesday. All I hear is some harddisk sound. I thought it went up the lorry already. (meaning dead) But then, for no reason, I managed to bootup and access all the data on Wednesday. Managed to backup all my photos to my laptop and important data to another harddisk. Just in case it die again.

Still wondering.... is my harddisk really ok or is it just a 回光反照?

回光反照 = the last breathe before dying. You know, sometimes before a person dies, he would suddenly be full of energy and look as though he is alright. Then he just collapse and die.

Should I just buy a new harddisk and replace the existing one? Afterall, this harddisk has been with me for quite some time already. Perhaps its time to let it retire.

Maybe I'll monitor the situation first.

The broken cable

The earthquake at Taiwan on boxing day damaged the underwater internet cable linking Asia to America. Internet connection to US sites range from slow to impossible. Wasn't able to log into blogger last night. Finally managed to do so tonight. What a relief. I almost died of Blogger Withdrawal Syndrome (BWS).

Don't you find the internet rather fragil? If I'm not wrong, there are only 3 major cables linking Asia to America. When 1 breaks down, the internet almost collapsed. Wondering what will happen if all 3 breaks down.

Hope the terrorist doesn't find a way to bomb all the underwater cable. The damage will be far greater than bombing WTC.

BTW.... did you all notice that there are quite a lot of major earthquakes on 26 Dec?
Iran earthquake on 26 Dec 2003.
Indonesia earthquake on 26 Dec 2004.
And now Taiwan earthquake on 26 Dec 2006.

I think they should stop calling 26 Dec boxing day. Perhaps rename to shaking day or earthquake day.

Harddisk dying

Heard a familar sound when I turn on my PC today. Not the usual sound of the harddisk booting up. But the sound that most computer user fear.

The sound of the harddisk dying!! AAAAHHH!!!!

Help... The last time I backup my pictures is 2 weeks ago. All the pictures I took during Christmas are still inside!!!

Damn. I should had backup everything to my notebook. Or even get a portable harddisk to backup my harddisk every now and then.

Look like I'm going to be rather busy this weekend trying to install a new harddisk and installing everything from scratch. Hope I can still savage the data in the harddisk.

Boxing Day

Still trying to figure why 26th Dec is call boxing day.
Is it because there is a boxing match?

Got quite a few Christmas present this year.

The first one is the $10 note from bottle.

Zhenzhen gave me a box of choclate from Royce.

Nice Chocolate. :)
She really knows all the good chocolate. Last Christmas, she gave me a box of Melty Kiss. This year Royce. I fell in love with them after eating. Oh ya hor, forgot, she used to work in at Max Blender.

OK, I cheated with Shanshan and Audrey this year. Instead of buying Christmas present, we choose the present we wanted.

Audrey got me the Dilbert Calendar

Think after 2 years of Baby blues calendar, its time to change. Starting to read Dilbert comic lately. I guess it would be nice reading Dilbert at office every morning.

Shanshan gave me a book.

"Why we want you to be rich" by Donald Trump and Robert Kiyosaki. Don't ask me why I choose this present. I just feel that it would be nice to read. Who knows, I might become rich after reading this. (Hahaha... wake up...)
OK lah, seriously, I enjoyed reading books by Donald Trump.

Shanice got me 2 shirt. 1 long sleeve, 1 short sleeve.

The long sleeve shirt is not the usual shirt you'll see me wearing. But anyway, its good to change my style. I'm sure its going to create a big hoo-ha when I wear to office.
The short sleeve is abit too tight. Either I go on a diet or change a larger size. Ok, I choose the easier way and go change a larger size one.

Thanks everyone for the presents! :)

Remote Control Car

My Nephew's god-mother bought him a remote control car for Christmas. It is those remote control car you see at Carfour where the front can rotate 360 degrees. Quite fun to play with actually.

Children nowadays are getting more and more fortunate. Remote control toys are dirt cheap. In the past, a remote control car would cost at least $100 in the past. Now they are getting cheaper and cheaper due to the mass production and low labour cost in china.

But 1 thing to remember when buying these made in china toys... Always check the instruction manual to ensure that they are safe for the children to read.

The erection go forwards to take the ex-round clockwise hover around

Luckily my 3 yr old nephew doesn't know how to read complicated words yet.

Going an extra mile

Christmas eve was very eventful. Got so many things to blog, but I'm just 1hr away from the Christmas dinner at my sis's home. So I'll just blog 1 event first, and leave the rest later.

Wanted to go pitstop cafe last night. Knowing that it would be extra crowded, we called to reserve a table for 5 of us.

We wanted a table at 9pm, but was told that the earliest is 10pm. Ok, we are fine with it. Then we were told that the table will be at the balcony as they are fully booked. I told her to try get us a table indoor and she said she will check and call us if she can find.

When we arrived at 10pm, we were told that there isn't any table for us. They thought that we only wanted indoor seat and thus gave the balcony seat to another group, and tried to find a table indoor but failed since its christmas eve and the place is super crowded. We thought that we are confirmed a seat at balcony, but they are trying to find a seat indoor.

Miscommunication I guess.

Anyway, we hopped over to TCC where we were given the best seats ever... the corner seat. Its a very enclosed corner, and it feel as if its a private room. I managed to 'swim' on top of 2 beanbags!!

Then Tim from pitstop sms-ed me to apologise for the miscommunication and offer me a 10% discount and a membership card on our next visit. Cool! That is what I call a good customer service.

Then came the crazy idea.

The guys were suggesting how about we ask pitstop cafe if we could rent a boardgame from them to play at TCC. The waitress at TCC confirmed that we can play boardgame there. So we SMS Tim to check if they allows it. After some SMS exchanges, they agreed to lend us a boardgame!!

And instead of us going over to collect the game, Tim personally delivered the boardgame to us. Never have I seen such good customer service before. Wait, we are not even their customer to begin with! Wanted to pay them for the game rental, but they refuse.

So there we are, playing Ticket to Ride at TCC all the way till Christmas. Thanks to pitstop cafe. :)

OK, so when are we going pitstop cafe again?

A Visit from Saint Nicholas

A Visit from Saint Nicholas
by Clement Clark Moore

'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there;
The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads;
And mamma in her ’kerchief, and I in my cap,
Had just settled our brains for a long winter’s nap,
When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.
The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow
Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below,
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a miniature sleigh, and eight tiny reindeer,
With a little old driver, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick.
More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name;
"Now, Dasher! now, Dancer! now, Prancer and Vixen!
On, Comet! on, Cupid! on, Donder and Blitzen!
To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!
Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!"
As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky;
So up to the house-top the coursers they flew,
With the sleigh full of Toys, and St. Nicholas too.
And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof
The prancing and pawing of each little hoof.
As I drew in my head, and was turning around,
Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound.
He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,
And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot;
A bundle of Toys he had flung on his back,
And he looked like a pedler just opening his pack.
His eyes—how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow
And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow;
The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,
And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath;
He had a broad face and a little round belly,
That shook when he laughed, like a bowlful of jelly.
He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,
And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself;
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread;
He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk,
And laying his finger aside of his nose,
And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose;
He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle,
But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight,
"Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night."

Cut me some slack

Sometimes, those people at Mindef can really get on your nerves.

It was lunch time. Like all normal working adult, I went out for lunch during lunchtime. Going out for lunch means no pda/pen/paper/watsoever with me. I got an SMS from Mindef telling me to call this number to listen to a message. Knowing that its most likely going to be another ICT or amber manning date, I decided to call later when I'm back in office. After all, I need a paper or something to jot down the dates right?

Less than a minute later, my phone rang. Its the same number that I'm suppose to call to listen to the message. When I pick up the phone, a computerise system told me to key in my NRIC number so that I can listen to the message.

HELLO.... I got your SMS less than a minute ago. Can you cut some slack? If I'm free now, I would had called you after recieving your SMS. But I'm out for lunch. Where the freaking hell do I find something to jot down the info that you are giving me?

Perhaps those people at Mindef thinks that everyone carries a black notebook with rubberband in their pocket.

And its not some life and death issue. Nobody is invading Singapore anytime soon. Not even a single rifle is pointing towards our direction now. They just telling me my alert amber manning period. Which, in case you are wondering, is 2 freaking months away from now.

Si bei kiasu leh.

iPod Blended

I was laughing whilst watching this video.

And they really put it up on ebay. For charity of course.

Check out more stuff that they blend.
Just wondering... is there anything that this thing can't blend.

Pervert at AMK MRT

I saw a pervert at the AMK MRT male toilet.

While I was queuing for my turn, I notice this Indian guy at the urinal, acting suspiciously. Firstly, he is at the urinal for exceptional long time. Then he wasn't really concentrating at his business. Instead, he keep looking left and right.

Luckily I get to use the urinal furthest away from him. When I'm done, he is still at the urinal. Finding it strange, I took my own sweet time washing my hands. When I'm done, he is still standing there. Either he is a pervert or his bladder have problem.

Since I'm waiting for my friend, I sat outside the toilet to see if he comes out or not. My friend arrives 10 minutes later. So I went into the toilet to 'wash my hands' and also check.......

That guy is still there! At the same spot. For the past 10 minutes!
Legs not tired 1 meh? Wah piang.... pervert leh.

I'll go think of something to buy with that $10.

Dreaming about work

Been rather busy lately at work.

Am about to cut over a project that I've been doing for the past 4 months. And now comes the hardest part. All the info we used during testing are dummy info. The marketing guys refuse to release the exact details until the last minutes. And I've been spending the past few days changing the data before promoting to production server.

Apart from this, I also have to attend the long handover meeting which took up half of my time in office. I'm going to handle my first request on this new task soon. Its suppose to be a very easy task. But with zero hands on experience, I guess even the easiest would look difficult.

I think I worked too much until I dreamt about work last night. And the most scary thing is, the details are quite accurate. The values in my dream are exactly the same as the values in real life. And I woke up wondering was I working or sleeping.

That explains the headache I had the whole morning.

Christmas Shopping part 2

5 more days to Christmas.

Went on another Christmas shopping today. A more productive one actually. I don't know why but I always managed to find Christmas presents at Takashimaya. Got almost all the Christmas presents that I need..... except for one. Still cracking head and thinking what to get for that troublesome woman.

Another reason why I like to shop for Christmas present at Takashimaya is because they have a huge gift wrap counter during Christmas. As you all know, most guys score zero when comes to gift warpping. I know, it will look more sincere if you do the gift wrap yourself. But judging from my skill in wrapping gift, I guess it would look more sincere if I get some help rather than I do it myself.

Thanks to all the wonderful ladies (and 2 amazing guys) working at the Takashimaya gift wrap counter.

I love gift wrap counters!!!

Wet wet wet

Its been raining for the whole day.

I got myself wet 3 times today. Once on my way to work, once during lunch time and once on my way home. And I'm holding those large umbrella. Luckily my new shoes managed to keep my feet dry.

Have you ever sat down and wonder, where did all the water come from? How did the sky managed to pour so much water on us suddenly?

If only we could exchange these rain for some snow. Please....

Call police when there is an earthquake

I still don't understand what are those people thinking.

There was an earthquake at Indonesia. Some part of Singapore felt the tremble. Which is quite normal as we are rather close to Indonesia.

But what I cannot understand is, why did 15 people called the police when they felt the tremble? I mean.... what can the police do about the earthquake?

Resident: Alo, police ah, my house shaking
Police: Don't panic Sir, there is an earthquake in Indonesia. You should be quite safe.
Resident: But shaking very badly leh. Can you go Indonesia arrest that joker that is shaking the place?
Police: Nobody is shaking the place. Its an earthquake.
Resident: OIC. Then can switch off the shaking or not? I trying to sleep.
Police: -_-'''

What if someone's life is in danger and is trying to call the police for help. And here we have 15 Singaporeans who hog the police hotline when there is an earthquake.

For what?

TIME's Person of the Year for 2006

Its you. Or rather me. Actually, its all of us. Congrats.

Who actually sits down after a long day at work and says, I'm not going to watch Lost tonight. I'm going to turn on my computer and make a movie starring my pet iguana? I'm going to mash up 50 Cent's vocals with Queen's instrumentals? I'm going to blog about my state of mind or the state of the nation or the steak-frites at the new bistro down the street? Who has that time and that energy and that passion?

The answer is, you do. And for seizing the reins of the global media, for founding and framing the new digital democracy, for working for nothing and beating the pros at their own game, TIME's Person of the Year for 2006 is you.

Source: Time.com

2006 sees a phenomenon where millions of internet users collaborate to make the internet more useful. From blogger to youtube to wikipedia, internet users help shape the internet to become a better place, replacing the usual media where we get our daily news and entertainments.

Guess all of us deserved this award. :)

On course day 2

A delayed posting.

My 2nd day and last day on course was last friday. Like the first day, there wasn't much things to learn. I guess all soft skill course are like this. Perhaps I should reject the next soft skill course if there is any. Technical skill course are much better. Still praying that my boss will send me to the SQL tuning course which I've been wantng to attend since last year.

I must say that the trainer is a very good motivational speaker. The reason why I didn't fell asleep dispite not learning anything new is because he managed to lifen up the class. After all, he is some district governor of the toastmaster club. Apart from the communication & relationship management, he also shared with us some life skills and positive thinking.

At the end of the course, he gave everyone of us his namecard. At the back of the namecard, there is a picture that offers a secret message to success.

Can you see the hidden massage?

Christmas Shopping

1 more week to Christmas. Beginning to get into the Christmas mood already.
I guess going for christmas shopping can really bring on the christmas mood.

I'm always scared of christmas shopping. Firstly, the crowd is horrible. Everywhere is full of people. Everything also need to queue up.

And the most headache thing is finding the right presents for my friends. I'm always wondering if my friends like the present I bought and if they have that item or not.

Its always a headache trying to find the right gift for friends. But I guess the look in their face on christmas eve will tell you that all the troule is worth the effort. :)

Still need to find a few more presents..... Maybe go Orchard after work next few days.

Nat King Cole - Christmas Song

Chestnuts roasting on an open fire,
Jack Frost nipping at your nose,
Yuletide carols being sung by a choir
And folks dressed up like eskimos.
Everybody knows a turkey and some mistletoe
Help to make the season bright.
Tiny tots with their eyes all aglow
Will find it hard to sleep tonight.
They know that Santa's on his way -
He's loaded lots of toys and goodies on his sleigh
And ev'rymother's child is gonna spy
To see if reindeer really know how to fly.
and so I'm offering this simple phrase
To kids from one to ninety-two
Although it's been said many times,
Many ways: "Merry Christmas to you"

Hello Beta

Still remember whenever we learn a new programming language, the first lab exercise will surely be "Hello World" program.

I've just converted to blogger beta. So I guess the first post should be "Hello Beta" posting.

Anyway, I was thinking about it last night. Maybe I'm encountering problem posting comment on beta site because blogger is pending my conversion to beta. So after reading the comments from Cobalt Paladin and The Imp, I decided to take the bold step to convert to blogger beta.

The came the first problem. It appears that the coding from my template can't hide the header for blogger beta.

Help!! Somebody want to chop off my head!!!

Ok... I'll think of a solution for this later. Either find the codes that disable the header or move my head lower.

Then came the next problem. I can't load the comment page! And the strangest thing is, my friend could load the page. Then after a couple of tries, I managed to load my comment page. Only to discovered that the delete comment button is missing. -_-'''

Dear Spammer, please do not spam my blog until I discovered where did the delete button goes.

Updates 10 mins later: OK, Tried logging out then logging in again on the comment page and I finally managed to delete the comments.

Updates 15 mins later: Tried commenting on both blogger beta and old blogger blog. No issue.

Perhaps its some conspiracy theory by blogger to force everyone convert to beta asap. lol.

Cannot comment on blogger beta?

Just wondering, am I the only person encountering this problem?

Sometimes, I cannot load the comment page from those blog under blogger beta.

Then when I managed to load the page, I cannot post the comment.
Got this error msg.

Could not log you in. Double check your password or try again later.

When I tried posting using Anonymous, it just reloads the comment page and the comment doesn't get posted.

Am I the only person encountering this problem? Or is there a bug with blogger beta?
I'm really going to delay my conversion to blogger beta.

To Cobalt Paladin, The Imp, Paddy, ZhenZhen and many more blogger beta users: I wanted to post comment on your blog 1, but I can't seem to be able to post comment for the past few days!!! :(

The plan, the aeroplane and the missing 2

Tag:

This is going to be recorded down as one of those failed investment.

**Warning: This is a very long posting**

The plan
Few weeks ago, T forward me a link to our company's intranet page. Its a laptop promotion for staff. Acer, Lenovo and Apple. What caught my attention was the Macbook.

1.83Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo Macbook selling at $1565. Wah. That is quite a good deal. Was tempted to buy one for myself, but had to remind myself that the current 13" Macbook is too heavy for my liking.

Then I got an idea. Why not I buy the Macbook, and try to sell it in the internet for a small profit. Surely it should be able to fetch a selling price of at least $1700 since the retail price is $1889.

If I couldn't find a buyer at $1700, at least I should be able to get $1600. Worst come to worst, I'll sell it at $1500 at a slight loss. If you want to make a profit, you must be prepared to make a loss first. I'm ready to take the risk.

I started posting ads on HWZ and SPUG. At first I quoted $1750, knowing people will surely bargain their way. But what I wasn't prepared was the bargaining power of people from HWZ. I got people who quoted me as low as $1000 for a brand new, unopen 1.83Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo Macbook!!! Crazy. I didn't even bother to reply that guy.

Things wasn't as smooth sailing as I expected. I thought people will fly to grab that brand new Macbook as its almost $200 cheaper than the original retail price. I was wrong. It seems that the Macbook doesn't have much resale value. I thought I'm going to make a loss.

Then someone came to me and offered to buy at $1650. Great. Sure... no problem. I told him that I haven't recieved the Macbook yet and will be getting it on Wednesday. He said ok. So we waited a few days.

When the Macbook was about to arrive, I tried contacting the buyer.

The aeroplane
Firstly, the buyer ask me if he could deal at the end of the month when he gets his pay. I was reluctant but still agreed since his price was the highest. A short wait should be worth the money. Then he told me he saw a lower end model which is more suitable for his budget as he is a student. I was pissed off.

If you can't afford the item, then don't bid for it in the first place. You bid a high price and got the deal, only to back out because it is out of your budget. Great. I know, he didn't do anything wrong as there wasn't any written agreement. But I'm just pissed off by such behavior.

The aeroplane flew by....

So I contacted the next highest bidder at $1600. He said he could only meet during the weekend. Fine with me.... at least he didn't back out or anything.

The missing 2
The Macbook arrive late due to some delivery cockups. It is supposed to be delivered to my office in the morning, but they forgotten about the delivery date and delivered to me in the afternoon. As I was in a meeting, I didn't check the goods and trust that everything should be in place.

It was only later at night when I've settled my work stuff that I managed to check the Macbook. That is when the shocker came.

Its a 1.83Ghz Intel Core Duo Macbook. Not a Core 2 Duo!!!

Did they delivered the wrong Macbook to me? Core Duo and Core 2 Duo are 2 very different thing. Core Duo is surely not worth the $1565 that I paid for it. So I email to the admin incharge of the staff sales.

It turns out that there was a typo error in the Intranet page. It is suppose to be a Core Duo and not a Core 2 Duo. Left with no choice, I asked for a full refund.

1 big wasted effort. Wasn't even able to make that mere $35 profit.

Lesson learnt
It is not so easy making profits by such buy and sell.
Be prepared to make less profit or even losses.
Pay attention to details.

Hmmm.... pay attention to details.....

Those who knows me well should know that paying attention to small details is not my forte. I'm well known to be careless. Yet I don't know why I managed to notice that small details this time.

I'm glad that I notice it. And I must remind myself to always pay attention to the small details in the future. FYI, I'm not the only staff in my company who bought the Macbook. But it appears that I'm the only person who notice the error.

Am I going to continue doing this buy and sell thing?

Acutally, I had a small discussion last month with a friend of mine regarding doing a buy and sell business together. Our intention was to buy in expensive toys from USA to sell in Singapore thru blogs.

That is one of the reason why I bought the Macbook to sell. So that I can experience the process and see if it is feasiable. But this Macbook deal turns out to be a failed one.

So am I still going to go ahead with the plans? I'm having second thoughts now. Pehaps I'll still continue, but with proper planning first. We'll see.....

On course day 1

I know sure got people say "Wah ciao, you on course again!"

Again meh? This is the 3rd course I've been to over the past 3 3/4 yrs at my company. Its not that much what.

Anyway, this course is a lot different from the previous 2 courses (PLSQL and J2EE) that I've been to. The previous 2 course are both on technical knowledge. This time, its on soft skill.

It is a 2 day course on Communications & Relationship Management.

Actually, there isn't much to learn. Most of the thing mentioned in the course are things that we already know. Maybe sometimes you didn't notice it only.

Anyway, it was a fun course. Take this as a break away from my daily work.

Wireless(at last)@sg

Finally managed to connect on to wireless@sg. Cheers!

The odd one out

Our team just took over a project recently and is suppose to maintain the project by adding and amending the items when request comes in.

But the problem is, alot of things from this project is different from the usual way we do things in our team. Alot of extra steps were taken. Alot of conditions to follow. Now that we taken over the project, I was wondering if I should change the process so that it will become similar to what the rest of the team is doing or should I let it remain as it is.

I tried changing once part of the process today. But the requester told me that my way of doing is different from the way they did during the project phrase. I know, but those are additional steps that my team doesn't do.

My colleague was asking me why I keep on wanting to change the process of that project. Why can't I just follow the process.

I don't know. Should I follow the existing process and let this project be the odd one out in my team?
Or should I try to change the steps so that the process look more similar to the things my team is doing?

Why am I bothering so much anyway?

Fly Aeroplane

Really pissed off today.

I was trying to sell an item on the internet lately. Recieved quite a number of bids, but most of them are ridiculously low.

Then I got a offer from someone who is near my idea selling price. So I told him that I'll wait for 2 more days to see if there are any higher bids. He agreed and asked me to inform him if anyone outbids him.

Seems like he is a very keen buyer.

So after 2 days of waiting, still nobody matched his price. So I decided to close my deal with him. That is when I feel that I'm at a Airport.

Firstly, he ask if it is ok to deal at the end of the month when he got his pay. I was abit reluctant at first. But agreed to wait since his offer is the highest.

30 minutes later, he sms me telling me that he saw another similar item at ebay which is much cheaper. That similar item is actually a older model, that is why it is cheaper. He said that one is more affordable for him as he is still a student.

So I ask if he still wants me to wait for him to get his pay cheque, he said he don't want to hinder my sales and want to back out.

In the first place, if you cannot afford the item, then why the hell do you still bid for it? Argh. Now that you won the auction, you come and give me all sort of crap excuses. Go and die lah. Now I have to start finding buyers all over again because you bid so high and scare away other buyers.

Argh.... Go fly your aeroplane elsewhere.

U2 & Pavarotti - Miss Sarajevo

Is there a time for keeping your distance
A time to turn your eyes away
Is there a time for keeping your head down
For getting on with your day

Is there a time for kohl and lipstick
A time for cutting hair
Is there a time for high street shopping
To find the right dress to wear

Here she comes
Heads turn around
Here she comes
To take her crown

Dici che il fiume [You say that the river]
Trova la via al mare [finds the way to the sea]
E come il fiume [and like the river]
Giungerai a me [you will come to me]
Oltre i confini [beyond the borders]
E le terre assetate [and the dry lands]
Dici che come fiume [You say that like a river]
Come fiume... [like a river...]

Here she comes
Heads turn around
Here she comes

A time for kiss and tell
Is there a time for different colours
Different names you find it hard to spell

Is there a time for first communion
A time for East 17
Is there a time to turn to Mecca
Is there time to be a beauty queen

Here she comes
Beauty plays the clown
Here she comes
Surreal in her crown

我知道对或错我自己能分辨

It has been a tough week at work.

Basically was quite pissed off with someone from another. This is the first time I'm working with him on a request and I couldn't stand his working attitude and method. I really wonder how did another colleague of mine managed to work with him all these years.

Firstly, he demands that information send to him in a special format. His format. And I have to waste my time to re-arrange the data into his format for his preference. Where got time? I wasted 1/2 the week attending meetings after meetings. And I still got other request and LAN admin work to do. But since he insist, I did what he wanted.

Then he require alot of information from our team. I've worked with his teammates before. I knew what information their team needs to get their job done. Usually I'll quickly send the information their team need and do the rest of the task later when I'm free. I really don't understand why he need those extra information. Those information are only for our team use only.

I guess he needs it for his additional info. So I didn't rush those extra info out for him. Just gave him what his team usually requires. But he keep chasing me for those extra info. I asked him countless times why he need those info, he keep telling me not to ask and just give him. Since he can't tell me why he needs it, I put that on the lowest priority and carry on my other work.

And to make my life easier, I told my requester to send us the information in the format requested by him. I guess it would be easier for us if the requester use the same exact format that I'm sending him. When he found out, he told me that the format should be prepared by our team and not the requester.

Why can't I ask MY requester to give me the format I want? Didn't he also insist that I give him the data in the same format? Wouldn't it be better to use that format from the beginning instead of our team doing the conversion in the middle?

Tried to explain to him why I wanted the requester to send me the data in that format. He refuse to listen to my reasoning and insist that the format should be done at my end without give me a good reasoning. Seeing that I don't buy his instruction, he went to talk to my teamlead.

That is the last straw. I hate it when people drag my teamlead into the picture. I am not an unreasonable person at work. If he can give me a good reason why the things should be done this way, I will listen. But he didn't provide me a good reason.

In the end, my teamlead ask me to do the conversion to his format and provide him the extra info that he need. I could had protested further, but I gave up. If that guy want to drag my teamlead in to surpress me, then let it be. I know my teamlead is doing that to avoid conflict. No point adding problem for him.

Now I know why that guy spend so much time at my team. I always joked that he is 50% my team because of the amount of time he spend at my team telling my colleagues what to do. I wonder how my colleague endured him so long.

I hate it when people come poking their nose into the way I do my work. If you think that my method is not good, then give me a good reason and I'll listen.

I know what is right and what is wrong. And for the last fucking time, don't ever drag my teamlead in to force me do your unreasonable request. If not for the sake of my bonus, I would have scold you upside down until the people at the end of the office can also hear me. And you should know how big the whole office is.

Should I switch to beta?

Blogger is finally asking me to switch to the new version. The beta version.

Yes, I'm excited about the new features that the beta version offers. Especially the ability to have labels and the updated dashboard. But I'm having 2nd thoughts about switching so early.

I don't know if it is just my computer or everyone experience something similar. Have you ever tried to post a comment on a blog that is in blogger beta version, only to find that the post comment page never gets loaded?

I do experience that sometimes, especially at night. I'm wondering is it something to do with my IE or blogger.

I think I'll just stick to the old blogger a little while longer....

No OT today

For the first time this week, I saw the sunset while walking out of the office.

OK, didn't really see the sun as it was cloudy. But at least there is still sunlight when I walk out.

Been OT-ing lately. Rushing a request that is suppose to be due today. And spending 1/2 of my time in office having meetings.

Actually, I'm suppose to OT today also. The request hasn't been completed yet. But another team couldn't meet the deadline and asked the requester to delay the promotion date.

I was happy that they asked for extention.

But I also told my colleague the difference between our team and other team. When our team can't finish the task on time, we stay back and do OT. When other team can't finish in time, they simply ask for extention.

The grey area

The director from another dept wants a written report for the error that occur last Thursday.

What actually happened was someone run a poorly written SQL script which cause error in the job. My colleague also made a mistake by giving wrong instructions to the operator when the error occurs.

If my colleague had given the right instructions, then some of the errors could had been prevented. She has just taken over the task for 4 days. Can't really blame her for making the error. But seriously, this is the first time such error occur. Think most people might make similar error.

I told my colleague not to report the mistake she has made. The whole problem was because someone wrote a problematic SQL script. If the person didn't make that error, she wouldn't had made an error too. Besides, even if she did everything correctly, there will still be error that night. Just that a correct action by her would had reduce the degree of the error.

It is a grey area. Is her error considered an error?

I think it is considered an error. But felt that it is not necessary to let the top know that she made an error. After all, the idea of the error report is to identify the person who cause the error. Since everyone know who wrote the problematic SQL script, I don't think there is a need to add another person's name to the list. Make no difference.

And strictly speaking, I feel that the DBA also made some error too. Well.... that is also another grey area.

Wearing 2 seatbealt

Just wondering.... anyone here wears 2 seatbelt in a car?

When DBS introduced the second factor authentication (2FA) for their iBanking services, I thought it is meant for customer who requested for it. To me, it is just overkill.

Then I recieved this package few days back.

Damn. I was auto-included in the stupid overkill scheme. Called their customer service to request for opt-out from the 2FA. I was told that I can't.

It just doesn't make sense. The idea of internet banking is to allow user access to banking service anywhere conveniently. But now, we need to carry this stupid looking dog tag where ever we go so that we can access internet banking. Why should I be forced to carry this?

Isn't our existing userid and password safe enough? How can a hacker hack our userid and password? They can't use brute force because there will be a limited number of tries. They can't intercept the data transmitted over the internet because it is 128bit encrypted.

Only way is via key logger or phishing. Keylogger is some program installed in your computer that capture all they keys that you press. Phishing is where hacker create a fake website that look exactly the same as your internet banking website to trick you to revealing your userid and password.

So can the 2FA prevent keylogger and phishing? No. It does make it harder for hacker to gain access to your account, but its not impossible. The 2FA generate a new set of number every 60 second. Meaning when hacker got your userid, password and 2FA key, they got less than 60 second to access your account or the password is invalid. Its hard for hacker to do that, but it is not impossible.

But look at it this way, so what if a hacker managed to gain access into our internet banking account? What damage can he do?

Ok, the hacker can look at your bank account balance. See see lor. I suppose most people don't mind, judging by the number of ATM reciept thrown on top of the machine. He cannot transfer the money to his account or pay his bills. Because you need to set up a new transfer or bill payment arrangement. And to set up the arrangement, the internet banking will sms you a passcode which you need to enter before you can start transfering money.

So basically, a hacker can't take your money even if he has access to your internet banking account.

So why are we forced to wear 2 seat belt in a car?

From what I understand, it is a Monetary Authority of Singapore ruling. All the banks in Singapore must provide 2FA for their internet banking service.

Ok, then why doesn't DBS give customer the option of using SMS instead of the stupid looking dog tag? Look what UOB is doing. They are giving customer the option to choose between a dog tag or SMS. I'll surely choose SMS so that I don't need to carry an extra device everywhere I go.

I hate the dog tag. I want the freedom to log into my internet banking anywhere I like. Still thinking if I should cancel my DBS account as a sign of protest. The problem is, my company deposit my salary into that account. If I want to close it, I'll need to inform payroll to change the account too.

I miss that pretty gal sitting on the floor with a iBook.

I'll miss the feeling of that freedom she is enjoying.

Can someone get rid of that aunty with 2 seatbelts?

PS: Interesting..... the gal using the ibook represent freedom of logging into their internet banking anywhere you like (no wires, sit in a relaxed manner and dress casually), while the gal with 2 seatbelt represent being restricted when logging into internet banking (tied with 2 seatbelt, sitting straight and dress formally).

I'm working at Carl's Jr

Nope, I'm not selling burgers.

I'm using the free WIFI at Carl's Jr to send emails and doing some coordination work for that stupid thing.

Oh crap. Heard from a colleague that yesterday's datapatch finish exceptionally early. Meaning if the director were to approve the datapatch for yesterday run, we won't need to go thru so much trouble. He should had approved the datapatch for last night run. If it exceed the 7am timeframe, we could kill it and take further action today.

Another bad desision by that director. Argh....

They're taking the hobbits to Isengard

Last page of the calendar

We are at the last page of the calendar again.

1 more month left in 2006.
Are you going to make full use of it or waste it?

Ego

Suppose to run a long datapatch yesterday that will take more than 3 hours. We got everything ready but haven't got any approval yet.

Yesterday's datapatch was a major one. There are several important and long running datapatch on top of the one that I need to do. Had everything planned properly with my colleague. Our datapatch will be the last in queue. We got a 12 hour time frame for the datapatch. Informed the operator to kill our datapatch if it exceed the 12 hour time frame. So, everything was more or less settled.... except one thing.

No approval from director.

Basically, the director is very concern about yesterday's datapatch. There was an error on the previous day datapatch which causes some problem to the system. Several users complaint to helpdesk and the issue was escalated all the way to the group CIO. So when the director knew that we are going to do that datapatch, he refuse to approve although we have everything covered.

No means no, even when we tried to explain that everything is covered. But our datapatch is also rather important. So we decided to request for a special datapatch during the weekend. He said ok and told us to do at Sunday morning. But there are some jobs running during Sunday morning which could cause error to the datapatch. So we explained to him and told him the risk. But he insist that Sunday morning is better. I suggested doing at Sunday evening where there is no other job running. He rejected, and told us to do on Sunday morning.

Explained to him a few times the number of risk involved when doing on Sunday morning. Also explain to him how safe is it to do on Sunday evening. He just insist that we do on Sunday Morning and not Sunday evening although he didn't say exactly why we cannot do on Sunday evening.

In the end, the final conclusion is to do the datapatch on Saturday evening. WHICH is totally no different from Sunday evening. So why die die cannot Sunday evening?

My only conclusion is.... ego.

And so, 4 people stayed back until around 8pm on a Friday evening to re-arrange the whole datapatch to cater for this special Saturday evening datapatch. Actually, it is totally safe to run the datapatch yesterday night. We got everything covered. But the director is scare that something might go wrong and decide to take the safest route. After all, the CIO looking at the datapatch since the error that occur the day before.

One of the female colleague broke down and cried because she couldn't take the unreasonable director anymore.

Looks like going to have another farewell lunch soon.

99 days left....

Finally left 2 digits to the end of my contract.

It comes the time for me to decide, yet again, if I should renew my contract this coming March.

Then I relook at the things that made me stayed last year.

Bonus & Increment
No doubt, last year's bonus and increment was good. So good that I forgotten that I'm suppose to bargain for a better contract. So good that I actually sign the new contract in less than 5 minutes. It was too easy for the HR manager.

But here is the problem. When you have a high bonus and increment last year, you would expect a bigger one this year. I seriously doubt they will give me anything better than last year. The best they could do is match what they gave me last year. And the greedy me say its not enough.

Career Improvement
I still remember my boss telling me that he might assign me to do a project. It was an interesting project. But the project never came to me. Instead, it went to another guy. Well, that is one year ago.

Job prospect look good lately. Couple of challenging new profiles are being assigned to me. Boss said that he might need to send me for another course so that I might need in the new task. But the thing is, are these new experience useful for me? Are they detailed enough or just skin deep?

Team manpower
The last time I renewed my contract, one of my colleague is pregnant and another is going for a leg operation. One of the reason that I stayed is because the team is going to be short handed without the 2 of them. It would be worst if I leave.

But there is no manpower issue now. Both of them are back. Although some colleagues resigned lately, we also have new members being transfered from other team. We are also beginning to outsource some of our stuff to China lately.

Someone
Actually, the main reason why I renewed my contract last time was because of someone.
But now that she is no longer here, I don't see the point of me staying anymore.

In the past, if someone ask me what is the proability that I'll be renewing, my answer will be 50%.

Now, the chances of me staying is 20%. Maybe less....

Wireless Helpdesk

Couldn't log on to the internet at my Oasis.

Since I'm still a paying customer of their outdoor wireless surf, I decided to call the Singnet helpdesk to get them to fix the problem.

After telling the tech support that I couldn't log into their outdoor wireless surf, he asked me to check some setting on my laptop. I asked if he need to know my location first, he say no need. So ok, I followed the instructions, he couldn't find anything wrong.

On the line for 15 minutes and he still couldn't find anything wrong with my setting. Then the tech support guy asked me to reset my laptop. That is when I decided that I had enough. I asked if he ever considered that it could be their network problem, but he insist there wasn't any report of network failure.

Then I told him it also couldn't be my laptop because I log in to another network to get the telephone number to the helpdesk. That is when he decided he need my location.

Told him my location and he did a check and said that his system shows that the network is working.

Seeing this is going nowhere, I told him that his tracking system have error and hang up the phone. Useless anyway. There is nothing that guy can do.

I'll just stick to the slower, unstable but free network. Perhaps I should consider canceling my outdoor wireless surf with Singnet. After all, the wireless@sg is coming soon right?

(Wireless@sg suppose to start from 1st Dec. But I've been roaming all over the place and still can't find it. Maybe still have some problem.)
