Auld Lang Syne

Last day of the 2007. I usually spend the last day of the year thinking about what have I done for the past 365 days. 2007 seems to pass by very fast. Suddenly feel the sense of underachieving. Perhaps I need to make full use of every day in 2008 to achieve something. I can already feel that 2008 is going to be a very interesting year for me. I hope it is the same for you.

I always end the last post of the year with this song. Auld Lang Syne is a song that everyone sings on New Year countdown. But not many people knows what does it means. Auld Lang Syne actually means old friends and days.

Hope you guys enjoy this version by Kenny G.

Auld Lang Syne

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And auld lang syne?

For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne,
We'll tak a cup of kindness yet,
For auld lang syne!

And there's a hand my trusty fiere,
And gie's a hand o thine
And we'll tak a right guid-willie waught,
For auld lang syne

For auld lang syne, my dear
For auld Lang syne,
We'll tak a cup o kindness yet,
For auld lang syne!

Don't say I teach you one lah

Playboy website is being blocked by all Singapore ISP. Yes, the uber cool hip hop rapping MDA does not allow you to visit playboy website. You get this screen if you visit www.playboy.com

You see, porn is no good. You should be watching discovery channel instead of this.

But do you know that you can still access that site if you enter the url without the "www".

------

OK, if you are being caught, don't say I teach you one lah.

And I didn't surf that site. Saw this info from a forum.
I just go in, grab the image and exit the site. I didn't check out any of the playmates. REALLY. I SWEAR!

2008 New Year Resolution

1) Exercise more
OK, I know this item was in my 2007 Resolution. But I didn't really achieve it. Let's hope I'll do it this year.

2) Improve on my english and learn a new language
I really need to improve on my english language, both written and spoken. And as for the new language, I meant programming language.

3) Invest more money
Once again, something that was in my 2007 resolution but I didn't do. I really need time to research into Shares and put those idling money to work.

4) Stop procrastination
One of my biggest flaws. I think I need to put it to a stop.

5) Work on the opportunities that I've found in 2007
I believe 2008 is going to be an interesting year for me. Will be working on the opportunities that I've found in 2007.

Review of my 2007 New Year Resolution

Few more days to the end of 2007 and the beginning of 2008. Wow. That was fast. I thought we just countdown-ed to 2007 a few months back. I still remember I did a new year resolution for 2007. I guess now is time to look back and see what I’ve achieved.

1) Read more
2007 is really a year of reading for me. I don’t remember reading so much books in my life. And I’m glad that I started reading. These books gave me great knowledge and I’m sure I’ll be able to put them in good use in the near future. I think the best book that I’ve read this year should be 'Cashflow Quadrant' by Robert Kiyosaki. (OK, I know it’s a very old book. I should have read this book many years back.)

2) Exercise more
*look at tummy* Nah, didn’t exercise more this year. In fact, I exercise less. I really need to work on this next year. Yes, this is going to be in my 2008 resolution.

3) Save more money
I did managed to save more money this year. Surprise surprise. That is despite the fact that I bought a new iMac this year. Good job. Hope can keep it up for 2008.

4) Invest more
I didn’t do anything to change my investment portfolio this year. Initially, I wanted to start going into buying shares. But I didn’t because I haven’t done much research on it yet. Don’t dare to jump into the black hole without doing enough research. Heard too much horrible stories about people going bankrupt from shares. Don’t want to add to the death toll. Will try to find time to research into buying shares in 2008.

5) Look out for opportunities
One opportunity appeared in November and I grab hold of it tightly. It’s going to be a tough one, but I’m making sure that it will work out fine. 2008 is going to be a big year for this. Hope to make it.
There is another opportunity that I’ve spotted. Just that I’ve been putting it on hold for the longest period. It’s time I grab hold of it and do something to make it work.
And even when I'm writing this, I'm still looking out for possible opportunities. I let some of them slip cause I'm not ready to do it yet. But I'll make sure I'm in a better position next year to grab hold of the resolution.

OK, I guess it's time I start writing my 2008 new year resolution.

The Humans Are Dead

This song is not really intended for human.
Probably more for robots, in the future when robots has killed all the human.

Flight Of The Conchords - The Humans Are Dead

Affirmative, I poke one it was dead

How to downgrade from Vista to XP

You know Vista is crap when PC World wrote an article on how to downgrade from Vista to XP.

Vista is really unusable. I still remember my short experience with Vista when I was helping my teamlead install something on his new Laptop. Cannot stand it. Actually, I also don't really like XP. I prefer to use Win2k.

But still.... Why downgrade to XP when you can upgrade to MacOS?

Micro Olympics - Addictive game

Warning: The game that I'm about to talk about is highly addictive. Play at your own risk.

Found another addictive game call Micro Olympics. Play at your own risk. You have been warned.

I'm still stucked at the 5th guy. Can't make it pass 2500m. Yes, I know I suck at games.

The interesting thing about this game is that after playing it, my facebook display this message.

Think Kongregate signed some deal with Facebook. Of course I'm not going to let anyone know that I wasted so much time playing game on Kongregate.

Flunk my exam

It wasn’t really a surprise to me that I flunk my exam. I was quite confident that I will fail that paper when I walk out of the exam hall. And I was right after all. (Although I really wish I was wrong)

That is supposed to be the last exam paper in my entire whole life. Now it has become my 2nd last exam paper. So I can’t graduate this year. Have to wait another year before I get that piece of paper. I don’t need to retake the entire module. Just need to take the exams. But the stupid thing about this is that the exam is in Nov. I’ll have to wait 1 whole freaking year to retake the exams. What a stupid ruling.

Actually, I’m fine. Just feeling quite sian about the whole thing. I just wanted to get it over and done with. But looks like I can’t. I think I’ve reached a point where I see no use for a degree except to get a better paying job. The things I really wanted to do doesn’t requires a degree. And I’m not learning the skills that I need from this degree course.

And it makes me wonder more.... Why the hack am I trying to get that piece of paper?

Although it's been said many times, many ways...

Although it's been said many times, many ways...

Merry Christmas to you.

Hope you enjoy this song. It is one of my favorite Christmas Song. And although many people has sang this song before, I still like this version sang by Nat King Cole.

Simply the best. Enjoy and have a nice holiday. Cheers

Nat King Cole - Christmas Song

Chestnuts roasting on an open fire,
Jack Frost nipping at your nose,
Yuletide carols being sung by a choir
And folks dressed up like eskimos.
Everybody knows a turkey and some mistletoe
Help to make the season bright.
Tiny tots with their eyes all aglow
Will find it hard to sleep tonight.
They know that Santa's on his way -
He's loaded lots of toys and goodies on his sleigh
And ev'rymother's child is gonna spy
To see if reindeer really know how to fly.
and so I'm offering this simple phrase
To kids from one to ninety-two
Although it's been said many times,
Many ways: "Merry Christmas to you"

How to wrap a present?

OK, I know I suck at wrapping present. Usually I would go to the gift wrap counter and get professional help. But I don't have time to queue up at the gift wrap counter this year because of my last minute Christmas shopping. So got no choice but to wrap the present myself. At first I thought it should be easy since all the gifts this year are in box shape.

And I'm once again reminded how I suck at wrapping present.

How do people work in gift wrap counter? How did they wrap the presents so nicely? I really need to learn from them.

This year's wrapping paper is sponsored by Robinsons. Not all the presents are from Robinsons. Haha.

Happen to bump into this youtube video on how to wrap a present. It's done by a little boy. Amazed. I guess it's abit too late this year. But maybe can keep it for reference next year.

On 2nd thought, I think I can do better than him. If someone give me a video camera this year for Christmas present, I would be able to do a better video clip.

Not a Silent Night

I could never understand why Christmas eve is called Silent Night when everyone is partying and it's obviously not silent at all.

Anyway.... Have a good Christmas eve everyone. Happy Christmas and Merry New Year to all Decayonnet readers. (PS: Decided to re-rebrand back to the old name.)

Andy Williams - Silent Night

Silent night, holy night
All is calm, all is bright
Round yon Virgin Mother and Child
Holy Infant so tender and mild
Sleep in heavenly peace
Sleep in heavenly peace

Silent night, holy night!
Shepherds quake at the sight
Glories stream from heaven afar
Heavenly hosts sing Alleluia!
Christ, the Saviour is born
Christ, the Saviour is born

Silent night, holy night
Son of God, love's pure light
Radiant beams from Thy holy face
With the dawn of redeeming grace
Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth
Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth

Best Seasons Greeting ads

I love to look at the ads during Christmas season. Christmas is the time when the ads companies gets creative and come out with lots of interesting ads to wish customer a merry christmas. The beer companies are well known in doing this. It's nice to take a break at the end of the year and let the creative juice flow.

But the best season greetings ads this year isn't from the beer companies. Instead, it is from RSAF. I saw this at a bus stop a few days ago.

Fighter Jets escorting Santa? Haha. Good one guys.

Merry Christmas everyone.

A blue, blue blue blue Christmas

2 more days to christmas, I'm glad that I won't be having a blue Christmas.

Elvis Presley - Blue Christmas

I'll have a blue christmas without you
I'll be so blue just thinking about you
Decorations of red on a green christmas tree
Wont be the same dear, if you're not here with me

And when those blue snowflakes start falling
That's when those blue memories start calling
You'll be doin all right, with your christmas of white
But I'll have a blue, blue blue blue christmas

Youll be doin all right, with your christmas of white,
But I'll have a blue, blue christmas

Look ma! no wires.

Let's play photo hunt with the picture below. Can you spot the difference?

OK, I guess it's obvious that the wire is missing on the right. I just got the wireless mighty mouse today. Paid $8 for it because I use my Citibank credit card reward points to redeem a $100 discount voucher. Cool. Thank you Citibank.

Anyone interested in buying a secondhand wired mighty mouse? Used for 3 weeks only.

Look ma! No wires. :D

I'm dreaming of a white Christmas

I've always wonder how would it be like to have a white christmas here in Singapore. All we get here is rain, rain and more rain.

Love this oldie by Bing Crosby. Hope you like it too.

Bing Crosby - White Christmas

I'm dreaming of a white Christmas
Just like the ones I used to know
Where the treetops glisten,
and children listen
To hear sleigh bells in the snow

I'm dreaming of a white Christmas
With every Christmas card I write
May your days be merry and bright
And may all your Christmases be white

I'm dreaming of a white Christmas
With every Christmas card I write
May your days be merry and bright
And may all your Christmases be white

Uncomfortable cab

The cab was normal. Just that the cab meter is making me uncomfortable.

Taking cab from home to office use to be around $17 during the morning peak hours. Now its $21. That's a 24% increase. Bloody daylight robbery. And we are talking about smooth traffic. I don't dare to think how high the fare will go if I'm stuck in the peak hour jam. The 35% peak hour surcharge is too much already.

I think I'll either have to wake up early or find a new job that is near my house. Taking cab is too painful for the wallet.

The strangest thing is that the media said that the Taxi drivers were the ones who asked for the fare hike. I haven't seen taxi drivers who wanted the hike actually. Look, increasing the fare will only make less people taking cab. End of the day, you still take home roughly the same amount of money.

------

Watched midnight movie with gf after the ping.sg gathering. Since it's pass midnight, we have no choice but to take cab home. But the good thing is, all the cabs are queuing up and you get to select your preferred brand.

Uncomfortable cab and shitty cab were the first to have the fare hike. Ass n smarty cab just started the fare hike recently. So we decided to take other brand of cab.

Silvercab is nice. For now....

12 Days of Christmas

Well, this is not your usual "12 Days of Christmas". It's a funny version. You got to check this out.

It's done by an A Cappella group call Straight No Chaser. Enjoy.

Straight No Chaser - 12 Days of Christmas

Steal my handphone if you dare

OK, I’m not trying to show off or challenge anybody. But I feel like telling everyone "Steal my handphone if you dare". That is because I’ve just installed BAK2u Sony Ericsson edition on my precious K800i. So basically I can just throw my phone anywhere and it will come "BAK2me". :D

I was one of the beta-tester for this software a couple of months back. And when the final version was released for retail, Paddy sent me a free copy for reviewing and personal use. (Retail price at US$19.90) Cool. Thanks Paddy. (OK, actually he sent me this software couple of weeks back. But only found time to do a review today. Sorry for the delay.)

The installation process is a little bit tedious and complicated. But they make it easier by giving us a 3 page installation manual, filled with pictures. Once installed, the phone display a message "Protected by BAK2u". Although I wish I could change it to "Burn in hell phone thief". (ok, kidding kidding)

**Pls excuse my blurish photo. Taken using a lousy handphone camera.**

So basically here is how it works. Whenever you turn on your handphone, the software will ask for your password. If the password is wrong, the phone will automatically send a sms to a pre-defined number of your choice. This means you will be able to get the thief’s handphone number.

Next thing is to get some fierce person to call up that fellow and demand them to return the phone or you will lodge a police report. Chances are, they will be surprised that you got hold of their handphone number and they will most likely return you your phone in no time. You can sing "Back to you" by Bryan Adams while waiting for your phone to come back.

One more interesting feature on the BAK2u Sony Ericsson software is the Data Eraser. (Not sure if this feature is available for other version) What this feature does is that it erase everything in your handphone if someone key in the wrong password. The instruction manual says use it carefully. I think it's a great feature. Tammy won’t be famous if she had this feature in her phone. But I don’t really have any need for that powerful feature. The SMS back feature is good enough for me.

Great software. I think it is something that everyone should have on their phone. Other than Sony Ericsson, BAK2u also supports phones by Nokia, Lenovo, Panasonic, Samsung, LG, Dopod, HTC, HP, Eten and O2. Blackberry version is on beta testing and will be out soon.

Thinking of buying a copy each for my whole family. Wondering if I can get bulk discount. *wink wink* :D

Update (96 comments later): I think things are getting out of hand here. I don't mind if the 96 comments are proper comments. But some of the comments are just too much. Just because I don't moderate my comments or close the commenting in this entry doesn't means that you can do anything you like.

I think all this has to be stop. It makes no sense to keep reading and replying to some crazy comments here. We are going in circles. Go read BAK2u's Term Of Use if you want to know more. Everything is answered there.

National Treasure 2

Watched National Treasure 2 on Wednesday night. I've been watching free movie for 2 nights in a roll. Thanks to Ming for the invite this time. At first I thought he was kidding or drunk when he said he wanted to invite me for the movie screening. After all, I'm not a Nuffnang member. But I was rather surprised when I got an email from Nannywen informing me about the movie screening.

Reached Suntec earlier than expected to collect the tickets. There was a short queue for collecting tickets. I was given a sticker which says "I pay your bills" together with the 2 movie tickets. Hmm.... but I didn't pay your bills leh (and I don't foresee myself paying too).

The movie is nice. Still the same as National Treasure 1 where clues are flying all over the place and you will miss them if you blink your eyes. But the movie is worth catching.

Mariah Carey - All I Want For Christmas Is You

If you are still wondering what I want for christmas, well, all I want for christmas is you.
Or any of the items on my Christmas wishlist. :D

Mariah Carey - All I Want For Christmas Is You

I don't want a lot for Christmas
There's just one thing I need
I don't care about the presents
Underneath the Christmas tree
I just want you for my own
More than you could ever know
Make my wish come true
All I want for Christmas is...
You

I don't want a lot for Christmas
There's just one thing I need
I don't care about the presents
Underneath the Christmas tree
I don't need to hang my stocking
There upon the fireplace
Santa Claus won't make me happy
With a toy on Christmas day
I just want you for my own
More than you could ever know
Make my wish come true
All I want for Christmas is you
You baby

I won't ask for much this Christmas
I don't even wish for snow
I'm just gonna keep on waiting
Underneath the mistletoe
I won't make a list and send it
To the North Pole for Saint Nick
I won't even stay awake to
Hear those magic reindeers click
'Cause I just want you here tonight
Holding on to me so tight
What more can I do
Baby all I want for Christmas is you
Ooh baby
All the lights are shining
So brightly everywhere
And the sound of children's
Laughter fills the air
And everyone is singing
I hear those sleigh bells ringing
Santa won't you bring me the one I really need
Won't you please bring my baby to me...

Oh I don't want a lot for Christmas
This is all I'm asking for
I just want to see my baby
Standing right outside my door
Oh I just want you for my own
More than you could ever know
Make my wish come true
Baby all I want for Christmas is...
You

All I want for Christmas is you... baby

I wanna wish you a Merry Christmas from the bottom of my heart

7 more days to Christmas. (Panic! Christmas present haven't buy yet. Haha)
Advance Happy Christmas and Merry New Year to everyone.

I've decided to post a Christmas song everyday from today till Christmas day to create the mood for this holiday season.

First song in the list is Feliz Navidad. It's actually an oldie, but the mountain tortoise me only heard of this song the first time a couple of years ago. *hide face and run*

Jose Feliciano - Feliz Navidad

Feliz Navidad
Feliz Navidad
Feliz Navidad
Prospero Ano y Felicidad.

Feliz Navidad
Feliz Navidad
Feliz Navidad
Prospero Ano y Felicidad.

I wanna wish you a Merry Christmas
I wanna wish you a Merry Christmas
I wanna wish you a Merry Christmas
From the bottom of my heart.

Translation:
Feliz Navidad - Merry Christmas
Prospero Ano y Felicidad - Prosperous New Year and Happiness.

"I Am Legend" Singapore Premiere

I'm one of the first few people in Singapore to watch "I Am Legend" by Will Smith. HooWoo!!

My dear took part in the Class 95 contest and won a pair of ticket to the premiere. She knew that I'm interested in that show and took part in it without telling me before hand. She only told me about it when she confirmed that she won the tickets. Thanks darling. You are the greatest. :D

The contest requires her to write about what she would do if she is the last person alive on earth. And here is her entry.

I would find self-sustaining energy power sources to keep myself occupied with everything on the internet - since the internet will still be around long after the human race is eliminated. Find a trusty companion/side kick, e.g. a dog as well as a reliable food source. Would be fun to check out places which were previously inaccessible to us normal folks, such as The Oval Room in the White House, or climb to the top of the Statue of the Liberty. Most importantly, find good constant source of music to keep me accompany - would be tough to find another source of good music other than Class 95!

I think the last sentence nailed the question and make her one of the 10 winners.

The movie is great. Great show. It basically show us how Will Smith survive when he is the last person on earth. Kinda cool. Makes me wonder what would I do if I'm the last person on earth. Maybe go take all the great gadgets from Funan and Sim Lim. Haha.

But there is one part about the movie that is kinda crappy. The whole show would be perfect if they didn't do that. I can't help but to post here.

**Skip the text in the box if you don't want to read spoiler.**

SPOILER ALERT!

The whole show tries to be logical by giving reason why the human race was being wiped out. Everyone caught a virus which turns them to zombie. This is totally possible in today world. Everything seems so real UNTIL that girl came and say "God" told her to go to where the rest of the humans are. God?

For goodness sake. The whole show is so perfect. Everything in the show can be explained by scientific means until this gal comes out. What the heck.

**End of spoiler**

OK, other than that crappy part, the whole show is perfect. Love it.
Make it the last movie that you are going to watch for 2007. Or the first movie you watch in 2008.

Bringing our money elsewhere

It is quite difficult to find a dinner place in town on Friday evening. Why is it that so many places don’t allow reservations during weekend evening?

I was trying to organize a Christmas party for pingsters this coming Friday evening. Initially, we wanted to go either Fish & Co at the Glasshouse or NYDC at Heeren. But both places doesn’t allow reservations on Friday evening. And the last thing I want to do is to organize a gathering without making reservations. Currently, we got 8 people confirm coming and 15 people tentative. Assuming half of those tentative are coming, that will make our gathering 15 people. 15 people without reservation on a Friday evening is as good as sitting outside 7-11 eating instant noodles. Why do they allow reservations on normal days but not weekends? If the place is not crowded, why do I want to make a reservation to begin with? Doesn’t quite make sense, does it?

OK, I know it’s hard for them to reserve table when the place is crowded. I’m not blaming them. More of feeling sorry for them. After a few days of searching, we finally found a place that allows reservations on Friday evening. Vila’ge@Heeren. We are bringing our money there instead.

Come join us for the ping.sg Christmas party on 21 Dec, 6:30pm at Vila'ge@Heeren.
Requirements: Bring a Christmas present worth around $20 for gift exchange.

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow

Christmas shopping is madness. Everywhere is crowded. Can't seems to find any presents.
Suddenly gone into panic mode. 2007 is coming to an end, yet there are still lots of things left undone. Which also explains why I'm still awake at this hour.

Oh well.... let it snow. It's the holidays season. Why worry so much?

Michael Buble - Let it snow

Oh the weather outside is frightful
But the fire is so delightful
And since we've no place to go
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow

It doesn't show signs of stopping
And I've brought some corn for popping
The lights are turned way down low
Let is snow, let it snow, let it snow

When we finally kiss goodnight
How I hate going out in the storm
But if you really hold me tight
All the way home I'll be warm

The fire is slowly dying
And my dear we're still goodbye-ing
As long as you love me so
Let it snow, let snow, let it snow

Oh, it doesn't show signs of stopping
And I've brought some corn for popping
Oh the lights are turned way down low
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow
OH... let it snow

All the way home I'll be warm
All the way home I'll be warm

The fire is slowly dying
And my dear I'm still goodbye-ing
As long you love me so

Let it snow, Let it Snow, Let it snow
Let it snow, Let is snow, Let is snow
Let it snow, Let it snow, Let it snow

How many people in singapore are still single?

Someone googled "how many people in singapore are still single?" and landed on my website.

Finding it curious, I went to google to check out which position my blog is when searching for this question. To my surprised, I'm number 5. Haha. It was regarding this entry.

Well, I don't have the answer to that question there. But I know that I'm not one of them. *Wink* :D

Rebranding Decay On Net

Decay On Net has been in use for roughly 2 1/2 years already. It's about time I rebrand Decay On Net to keep up with times. Everyone change their brand name once in a while to improve their image. I think I should change the name for Decay On Net to something better.

The new name will reflect my promise to deliver fascinating and inspiring blog entries for your reading pleasure.

It took me lots of money and time to rebrand Decay On Net. After several months of brain storming and discussions with friends from marketing, branding and PR, I still couldn’t come up with a good name to replace Decay On Net. Someone even suggested keeping the old name. But that is so outdated. I need to think of a new branding to keep up with time. Die die also must change.

Then few days ago, I saw a news article on Science Centre rebranding themselves. See, everyone is rebranding themselves nowadays. Which means that I’m following the right trend.

The Singapore Science Centre is rebranding itself as Science Centre, Singapore.

The new name was unveiled as the Centre turned 30.

Education Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam graced its anniversary dinner on Friday.

The Centre now caters to 120,000 students each year.

With its new name comes a new logo, which is inspired by the Centre's promise to deliver a fascinating and inspiring discovery of science.

Hmmmm.... From "The Singapore Science Centre" to "Science Centre, Singapore". Brilliant idea. Why didn’t I think of that?

---------

So, ladies and gentleman, I'm proud to present to you the new branding for Decay On Net....

*Drum roll*

On Net Decay

Thank you.... Thank you.....

Ogilvy PR Media Night - Champagne & strawberries

I was invited to Ogilvy PR Media Night last Tuesday by Brian. The event was held at their main office at Ogilvy Centre along Robinson Road. They have this beautiful area with sofa and tables for entertaining guest. You might be wondering why I’m invited to a Media Night by a PR company. Well, new media also considered media right? It’s interesting to be invited to a party that used to be for the mainstream media. Perhaps it’s a sign that more people are beginning to recognize the influence of the new media in Singapore.

I finally get to meet Brian at that event. We’ve been liaising quite a bit on emails for the past few months and it’s good that I can meet him in person. Brian has a very interesting job title at Ogilvy call "Digital influence". Cool title. And we spend the whole evening joking on how he is going to influence us bloggers with lots of Champagne.

It was a pleasant evening with free flow Champagne and strawberries. I lost count on the number of glasses I drank. Brian’s director bought a whole bottle of Champagne to our table so that we could refill our glasses conveniently. Had a great time talking to them and understanding how the company works. Before leaving, we had a guided tour around the office by Brian. The office looks great. They even have a full time barista during office hour. Wow…. Suddenly I feel like sending my resume to Ogilvy. Haha.

It was a relaxing evening with lots of interaction among the never ending Champagne, strawberries and finger food. Had a great time. Thanks to Brian for inviting me to this wonderful event. Looking forward to more great events organised by Ogilvy.

Refer a friend to Blog2u and win an iPod Classic!!!

Blog2u.sg is doing a blogger recruitment drive now and they are giving away a free iPod classic from iSHOP by Club 21, running with a full version of BAK2u GadgetTrak Anti-theft software with it!!! Wow....

For the uninitiated, BLOG2u.SG is a match-making service for advertisers and bloggers; to deliver online word of mouth of products and services from freelancers, agents and even bloggers in the most cost effective method through blogs.

OK, back to the lucky draw. So here is how it works. All existing member of Blog2u can refer any of your blogger friends to sign up with blog2u and both the member and the new signup will get 1 Referral Point each. At the end of the month, Blog2u will conduct a lucky draw to decide the winner of the iPod. Every referral point means one chance in the lucky draw.

I wish I could ask people to sign up Blog2u, put my URL as the referral and get a chance to win the iPod. But Paddy say I don't qualify. Cause if I win, people will say we kelong. Damn. It doesn't pay to be friend with Paddy.

But well, you can still sign up Blog2u here and get a chance to win the iPod without any referral. Wish you luck.

Ouch

This must be very painful to the folks at Microsoft.

Fastest: Apple MacBook Pro

The fastest Windows Vista notebook we've tested this year (through 10/25/07) is a Mac. Try that again: The fastest Windows Vista notebook we've tested this year--or for that matter, ever--is a Mac. Not a Dell, not a Toshiba, not even an Alienware. The $2419 (plus the price of a copy of Windows Vista, of course) MacBook Pro's PC WorldBench 6 Beta 2 score of 88 beats Gateway's E-265M by a single point, but the MacBook's score is far more impressive simply because Apple couldn't care less whether you run Windows.

Philips Blogger Experience Breakfast

I attended a very interesting blogger event last Saturday by Philips organized by Fleishman-Hillard. It was an exclusive blogger breakfast event held at Corduroy Cafe, Vivo City. When I got the invite from Sabrina, my first reaction was "HUH? 9:50am on a Saturday morning?" Not again lor. I woke up early the previous Saturday to attend the Tech65’s 50th podcast. Why do they like to have events on Saturday morning?

But I didn’t regret waking up early and attending the event. It was very well organized and I’m very impressed with Fleishman-Hillard, Philips and Corduroy Cafe from the moment I step into the place till I left. I bump into Sheylara and Daphne on my way to the place. The moment we reach the cafe, we were greeted by an intern from Fleishman-Hillard. (I forgotten her name. Damn) Once registration is done, we proceed in and was greeted by staff from Philips and Fleishman-Hillard. They curtained up the whole place to block out the morning sun.

The breakfast was great. They got pancakes, hashbrowns, brownies, salads, puddings and some i-don-know-what-is-that-call but-it-taste-good. The coffee taste good too. (But I still prefer Danny’s Mocha at Geek Terminal) After the breakfast and some chatting with fellow bloggers, we took our seats and watch an impressive demonstration of Philips Ambilight and Ambisound.

Basically, Ambilight is the light you see behind the screen. Yes, the lights behind the screen are coming from the HDTV itself. The system actually detects the image being displayed on the screen and reflects a light on the wall behind it. For example, if the scene is mostly green, the HDTV will shine a green light on the wall behind it. The lights actually the screen seems larger and a gives you a more immersive viewing experience. We were shown movie trailers with Ambilight on and off. The difference is huge.

Ambisound is a way to deliver 5.1 surround sound without having physical speakers behind you. The whole system is just a speaker (which matches the HDTV well) and a woofer. It’s good for those who don’t want the hassle of doing cabling and stuff. I’m not a sound expert, but the effect is good. I used to have 5.1 surround sound speakers for my PC. Although Ambisound isn’t as good as having real physical speakers at your back, it is the best thing you can get from a speaker and a woofer placed infront of you.

And the most impressive part is that both Ambilight and Ambisound are designed by Singaporeans. Woo Hoo! Good job guys!

The door gift is great too. We were given a folder with press release statement/materials, discount voucher to buy and also a Philips Imageo Candle light. It’s beautiful. The light bulb is in a beautiful glass and gives you those candle light feeling. It has a rechargeable battery inside and comes with a nice charging base. To turn on and off, you just need to tilt the glass. The lights create a very romantic ambience. Thinks my girlfriend loves it. :D

The whole event is not a sales talk. They are not interested in selling the product to us. We bloggers are treated more like media and the whole event is like a press event rather than a blogger event. We were even given a folder with press release materials inside. I’m very impressed by the way the whole event goes. Glad that companies like Philips are ready to engage the new media. And thumbs up to Fleishman-Hillard for organizing such a great event.

It is nice to meet several bloggers friends at the event. Had the chance to catch up with several of them. I also got the chance to meet a few bloggers for the first time. It's good to be able to put a face to some of the blog that I've been reading. The guys at Philips were actually surprised that most of us know each other.

Thanks to Philips and Fleishman-Hillard for organizing such a great event.
Thanks to Sabrina for inviting me.
Thanks to Wee Teck for those beautiful pictures.

PS: Please excuse me for this late entry. Been rather busy lately.

ORD lor!

Time really flies. I’ve ORD-ed for 5 years already.

ORD LOR!

Still remember how excited I was on the day I ORD. There was some cockup with the admin clerks (as usual) and I end up collecting my Pink IC the next day. And I went around the camp for one last time, waving the Pink IC at people that I know.

Collecting back the Pink IC is a milestone for every Singaporean guy. It means:-
No more SOC.
No more area cleaning.
No more stand by bed.
No more f**king a**hole officers and specs.
No more guard duties.
No more extras.
No more knock it down.
No more shitty cookhouse food.
No more brainless task.
No more lights off by 10pm.
No more sai kang.

Well.... At least until we received our reservist call up letter.

You guys might as well go rob bank

I was looking at the new taxi fare hike. Wah ciao. This is too much man.

As an example, ComfortDelGro says a 9-kilometre trip off-peak will cost $8.40 (a 10% increase from the current $7.65) while a trip of the same distance during peak hours will cost $11.40 (a 49% increase from the current $7.65).

49% increase? Hell, we have something call Public Transport Council right? Where are they? What are they doing? Sleeping? Might as well disband this freaking useless council. Waste our taxpayers money.

Why not taxi company reduce their taxi rental instead? Why should we be paying more when your drivers refuse to pick up customer?

And the worst increase is the 35% surcharge during peak hours. Madness. You guys might as well go rob bank.

Will not take Comfort and CityCab. Wait. The Taxi Operators' Associations urge all the other taxi companies to adjust their taxi fares too. You all go eat shit lah.

Blogger Social Responsibility

Got an email from Paddy over the weekend. This is not about Bak2u or Blog2u. But about a charity event by Heart-to-heart that Blog2u is helping.

I’ve known Paddy personally for many years and I was a member of his now defunct forum wanttotrade.sg. The forum used to have some charity drive to collect food and daily necessities for Heart to Heart. Heart to Heart is a non-profit, non-government aided welfare set-up initiated by Teresa Hsu. She is 109 years old this year and still doing her part for charity. Reading about her contributions makes me feel ashame of myself.

It’s a pity that wanttotrade.sg is no longer functioning. But it’s nice to know that Blog2u is helping Heart-to-heart spread the message about their monthly food distribution drive thru their members. Blogging is not just about ranting and making money. There should be more to it.

It is good to know that Blog2u has adopted Corporate Social Responsibility concept. In the past, we only heard of large organization adopting CSR. But CSR shouldn’t be restricted to just large organization. SME can play a part too. Perhaps they can't create a big impact like large organizations, but it's the thoughts that count.

We bloggers can play a part in charity too. Maybe we can call it Blogger Social Responsibility? The blogsphere is a powerful media and I believe that we bloggers can help generate awareness on this great charity organization.

Do help spread the message on your blog.

The following items are needed monthly:

1) Instant Noodles
2) "Super" Coffee-mix 3-in-1.
3) Milo 3-in-1
4) Sugar (1 kg bag)
5) Cooking Oil (1 litre)
6) Rice (5 kg bag)
7) VitaSoy Soya Bean Drink (24x250ml)
8) Milk Powder (700g bag)
9) Bath soap (24 pieces)
10) Washing powder (1kg bag)
11) Toothpaste & toothbrushes
12) Eggs
13) Peanut Butter (170gm) & Others (e.g. old clothing in wearable condition, books, etc, please check with Heart-to-Heart Service)

Heart To Heart food distribution:
"Our next Heart To Heart food distribution is on Sunday, the 30th Dec., 2007 at 10am. All are welcome to take part. Kindly inform us if you are coming with transport or otherwise."

OK, I promise not to use misleading title to trick pingsters to read this message. But please please please help spread the words. Thanks a lot.

SG-Startups business discussion

OK, I think I'm the last attendee to blog about the SG-Startups Business Discussion (Previously known as Ping.sg Business Discussion) that was held last sunday. The whole thing start after a group of pingster discussed about business issue at the shoutbox. They decide to meet up one day to discuss further. And so there is a gathering.

The event was held at National Library's POD. It's at level 16. Out of bound to public. But thanks to Nicholas for linking us up with NBL. Many thanks to Johnson from EBIS for lending us this beautiful place for our discussion. They even sponsored us some refreshment.

The place looks beautiful. The view outside looks even better.

Hey, all these paid using our tax money. Am glad I get to see where my tax money go. Don't worry if you don't have a chance to visit this place. I've taken lots of picture. Haha.

OK, back to the discussion. The discussion was great for a start. It is unconference style and everything goes. But the thing about unconference is that Singaporeans are generally shy and don't speak out (Me inclusive). Luckily Paddy was there to keep things moving.

One very good question that was being ask that day was "What business would you setup if you have one million dollar?" That is a very good workout for the brain. So everyone took turns to say how they intend to waste use that million dollar on a business.

It is a good beginning. Looking forward to more such discussion. For a start, we created a facebook group so that it would be easier to keep in contact. Looking forward to more of such events.

What if you took just one?

Saw this short video clip on a forum. Very touching. Love the background music too.

Every day: so many opportunities to connect.
What if you took just one?

A thousand words

Great job. Looks like a Sony T200 commercial.
Wondering if there will be a part 2.

I'm turning on comment moderation

Hey everyone. Sorry, I have to turn on comment moderation for a short while. I used to be able to receive email notification when someone comment on my blog. But recently, there has been some bugs with blogger and the email notification is down.

In the past, I will get email notification whenever someone leaves a comment. If it is a spam, I would delete shortly after seeing the email. But now that the email notification is down, I don't know where the spammer post the spam comment.

Many bloggers encountered the same problem. Someone reported the problem at blogger's forum and their staff are looking into it.

I seldom get spam on my blog. But I think the spammers knew that blogger email notification is down lately and they are having a field day. Got a couple of spam comments yesterday. Luckily I saw them while browsing thru the comments. I don't know if there are any more spam comments. I'll try to catch them if possible. Damn those low life spammers!

I will turn off comment moderation once blogger fixed the problem. In the meantime, please bear with the comment moderation. I will approve them asap. Even if it is a hate comment.

Update: Seems like the bug has been resolved. :)

My good twin brother cannot be trusted!!!

After reading CNA's article on the Bring You Own Bag campaign, I feel that my good twin brother cannot be trusted.

According to an NEA survey, more shoppers have become aware of the BYOB initiative since it launched six months ago, with about 60 per cent supporting the campaign by bringing their own bags, making donations for plastic bags, buying reusable bags, or refusing plastic bags for small items.

The news say 60% of the shoppers support the campaign.

My good twin brother did some citizen journalism and wrote 2 article on the Bring Your Own Bag campaign.

Bring your own what? Bag?
Bring your own what? Bag? - 6 months later

The news article say majority of the people bring their own bags. But in his 2 article, he claims that only a small handful of people brought their own bags during the 5 minutes when he was there. If 60% of the people bring their own bags, then why were there so few people during that 5 minutes?

So I hereby conclude that he is lying! This guy cannot be trusted. He must have faked the numbers. He is trying to trick us into believing that the Bring Your Own Bag campaign isn't working. How could he do that? This guy is evil. And he still dares to call me "evil twin brother". Now looks who is more evil?

And one of the article even won the Ping.sg 2007 Best Citizen Journalism Post Award. He should be disqualified! That article is a fake! 60% of the shoppers bring their own bags. He is lying! Remove his title. Give the award to the next best nominee.

OK, another explanation is that the 60% aren't at the supermarket while he was there. But what is the chances of that happening? Very slim.

Don't trust my Good Twin Brother. He is a big liar. Luckily the mainstream media step out and show us the correct figures. Else we would never know that he is lying.

I'm beginning to wonder if he is lying about the wireless@sg issue too. Maybe wireless@sg is super duper fast and reliable. But he wrote fake article to give everyone the impression that it's a failure. Let's wait for the mainstream media to tell us the truth.

Miss Everything-also-escalate

Who need enemies when you got this kind of colleague?

There are several errors in the system from another team because some values aren’t entered. So one of the colleagues from that team send a mass email to our team to request us to provide the information. That was yesterday night 7pm. When I reach office this morning, I scroll thru the list and provided her with the information for those items under my charge. The remaining portion belongs to my colleagues. So we all thought the whole thing was over since we didn’t get any email after that.

3pm, my colleague forward me an email from her escalating the issue to top management. Some of the values aren’t provided to her. So she emailed to the big boss and ask her to look into the issue as it is urgent. When I look at the outstanding issue, I discovered that the person in charge of that item is on leave. We all thought someone supplied her with the information since she didn’t come back to us again. We are wrong.

I know this thing is urgent. But before she escalates the issue, shouldn’t she check with us first? Crap. Just trigger happy and escalate it all the way to the top. For what? Small small thing also escalate. She can just come tell us that this information wasn’t provided to her and we can dig out the answer for her.

I went over to her desk, and use a hash tone to tell her that the person in-charge of that item is on leave today. She should approach us first before escalating everything to the top. It’s not as if we aren’t providing her with the data required. The person is on leave and we didn’t know that she don’t have the answer.

I hate it when people escalate small issue. Is there a need to escalate small things like this? I already tone down quite a bit. I could have use a fiercer tone and let everyone in the office know about this. Since her desk is at the middle of the office.

Scott Adams could add this character into Dilbert comic. I’m sure everyone has a everything-also-escalate colleague.

65Bits Episode 50

Congrats to the guys at 65Bits on their 50th podcast. Wow. 50 podcast already. Great job guys. Look forward to more great podcast to come.

I was at Geek Terminal with several invited guest to attend their 50th podcast live recording. This is the first time I attended their podcast. Interesting to see how they do it. I didn't contribute much. Am seated quite far away from the mike, so need to shout a bit so that my voice could be heard. Anyway, I was just there to fool around and add some jokes. Haha.

You can check out their 50th podcast here. See if you can recognize my voice.

MOH and AVA advise public to discard chocolate cakes from Prima Deli

MOH and AVA advise public to discard chocolate cakes from Prima Deli

1. The Ministry of Health (MOH) was notified of a food poisoning incident on 23 November 2007. As more incidents were notified, epidemiological investigations indicated that the common food item between the various incidents were Prima Deli chocolate cakes purchased as early as 19 November 2007. To date, MOH has been notified of eight such food poisoning incidents associated with the consumption of Prima Deli chocolate cakes.

2. MOH and theAgri-Food & Veterinary Authority (AVA) conducted joint inspections of Prima Food Pte Ltd which produces the chocolate cakes for all Prima Deli retail outlets. Food and environmental samples were taken for laboratory analysis. Preliminary results on 03 December 2007 for the food samples are suggestive of Salmonella as the likely causative agent. Prima Food Pte Ltd has been instructed to stop the production of all chocolate cakes and to recall all these cakes from distribution and sale. Screening of food handlers is in progress. Investigations are ongoing to determine the source of the contamination.

3. As at 03 December 2007, there were a total of 106 cases including six hospitalised cases, all of whom have been discharged. Six cases tested positive for Salmonella Enteritidis. The last case had onset of illness on 26 November 2007.

OK, let me give you a summary of events. (Souces from MOH press release and newspaper)

19 Nov (Mon) - First report of cakes being affected.
23 Nov (Fri) - MOH informed
24 Nov (Sat) - MOH and AVA conduct joint inspections (Estimated date)
26 Nov (Mon) - Last person to show symptoms.
26 Nov to 2 Dec - 50 of the factory's 100 employees sent for health checks
30 Nov (Fri) - Prima Deli stopped all production and recalled two types of chocolate cakes
3 Dec (Mon) - Preliminary results out.
3 Dec (Mon) - MOH and AVA advise public to discard chocolate cakes from Prima Deli
4 Dec (Tue) - Reported on newspaper.

What did MOH and AVA do between 24 Nov till 3 Dec?
Why didn't they announce earlier? The last case was on 26 Nov (One week ago). Which means the situation is more or less contained. Why announce when the cake are safe? Shouldn’t they issue the warning earlier? Furthermore they have stopped production of the cake since last friday.

So if you still have Prima Deli's Chocolate Cake in your fridge, please discard them now. Even if they are not contaminated, they should be spoilt by now!

OK lah. Don't worry. Their cakes should be safe now.

Congestion expected on Decayonnet

Lots of things that I want to blog lately. But yet to have the chance. It has been a busy weekend for me. So many things to blog, so little time. And the new iMac isn’t helping much. Still exploring the features. I’m getting more familiar with it now. But still need more time.

Here are some of the stuff that I’m going to blog about soon.

Tech65 50th podcast
Ping.sg business discussion gathering
Eee PC at Sitex
iMac
Christmas deco on my office table
Christmas wishlist

I think there are more. Let me try to recall.
Now, all I need is time to sit down and write about them. And I need to transfer all my pictures to the iMac so that I can attach them to my blog entries.

Expect congestion of blog entries for the next few days.

Free coffee at Starbucks on 6 Dec 2007

It's the annual Starbucks Christmas Open House.

Starbucks will be giving out free coffee on 6 Dec 2007 (Thursday) between 5pm to 7pm. You can make a donation of any amount and all proceeding will go to The Salvation Army. BTW: This only applies for Singapore Starbucks. Not sure if other countries have similar events too.

Expect long queues. For me, I'll rather go on normal days so that I can enjoy my coffee peacefully.

99 days left

99 days left till end of contract. Meaning bonus and pay increment are coming. Yippie!

As usual, I'm starting the countdown on my whiteboard.

99 days left till end of contract
28 weekends
5 public holidays
2 leaves
64 working days left!!!!

To everyone, the just seems like random number. Unless I tell them the meaning, I doubt anyone would be able to guess what are they for.
OK, lets hope none of my colleagues reads this blog. If you do read this, don't tell anyone what do those numbers mean. Especially my teamlead. :)

Hello MacOS

I finally got myself a iMac! WOOHOO!!
OK, I know some people will be saying "FINALLY!". Yes, I've been saying I want to get a iMac for the longest time. Been searching for the best offer. Missed a few goods one, thinking the next one will be better. Until I'm so sick of disappointment that I decided "What the heck?". Just buy one and get over with it. And here I am finally.

Spend the whole night clearing my table which was in a complete mess and unworthy of a iMac.

From this...

To this....

Simplicity is the "IN" thing now. Now I got lots of space on my computer table. You might be wondering, where are the rest of the stuff. Well, they are currently on the floor now. I think I need to find a box to keep them. Room is in a mess (which overflows to the living room too).

OK, this is a 20 inch iMac. I know I keep saying that I wanted to get a 24 inch iMac. But the plans sort of changed along the way. Decided to get a 20 inch iMac instead and use the remaining money for something else. :D

Now I'm feeling a bit alien to computer. Still not familiar with MacOS. And the ultra flat keyboard isn't helping. Keep pressing the wrong keys. But generally, everything is great. Love expose! Love dashboard (Although I need more widgets).

Still need lots of exploring on MacOS. Especially the file structure and downloading files. (Confused over the mounting and stuff) And need to relearn the the shortcuts. -_-'''
Is there any online tutorial for MacOS newbie like me? Or maybe I should go library to borrow the "MacOS for Dummies". Haha.

OK, will keep this entry short. Need to spend more time trying to figure out how to use MacOS. Lots of things explore. Lots of things to install. Well, at least the experience is a lot better than PC.

PS: This is my first entry written on a MacOS.

Happy Birthday to Wireless@sg

Happy birthday to you Wireless@sg.

It has been one year since you started. I wonder if anyone at IDA remembers that today is your birthday. If you were successful, I think everyone in Singapore will remember this day and celebrate your birth, But you are a great disappointment. Maybe because it is still early for us to pass judgement. Or it could be the over promise made by your parents.

There were talks of future plans like Wimax and stuff. Yes, Wimax sounds good. Longer range and faster access. But what the point of faster access if you can't even log in to begin with?

I still remember my first experience with Wireless@sg. It wasn't a pleasant one. In fact, there wasn't any experience since I couldn't connect on that faithful night. But I didn't give up on you that night cause it was your first night. Perhaps you still need sometime to fine tune everything. But as the time goes by, it seems that the standard will never improve. Getting wireless@sg requires lots of luck. I guess I wasn't lucky enough. That why I keep encountering problems with wireless@sg. Till I got so pissed off that I switched to mobile broadband lately.

I'm blogging this entry at Orchard Road now. Rightfully, there should be wireless@sg network here. But I decided to use my mobile broadband instead. Why risk having high blood pressure?

Anyway, Happy birthday wireless@sg. Hope the standards will improve by your next birthday.

A public apology for the “One Night Stand” blog entry

I know it is going to be controversial when I posted that article on "One Night Stand". The whole entry is meant promote awareness for Free Rice and at the same time as a joke. I know some of you felt offended because I use misleading topic and text in ping.sg to attract attention. Although I did apologize in that post itself, the reaction I get is rather mixed. Some feels that it is ok while others thinks that I shouldn't have done it.

I know it is not the right thing to do. But sometimes I feel sad that important entries aren’t getting the attention it requires on ping.sg. I personally feels that the Free Rice website is a brilliant idea. My initial entry on Free Rice only attracted 6 pongs from ping.sg. I feel that such a post need more attention. Feeling helpless, I resort to using misleading title to generate awareness. That misleading post hit top 10 within 40 minutes and has a total of 186 pongs till now. I know it is wrong, but I hope you understand that I’m doing this for the sake of charity.

Please except my sincere apologise for the misleading title in the “One Night Stand” blog entry.

And please continue to support Free Rice. Help spread the words about this fantastic website.
